The German title for the diorama, 'Die Schlacht bei Passchendaele 1916', is not correct. The scene depicts a Mk I British tank, which means the year is correct but the location is not. The diorama represents 'Die Sommeschlacht 1916' or, more specifically 'Die Schlacht bei Flers 1916' – The Battle of the Somme or The Battle of Flers (within the Somme campaign). Mk Is were not used in the Ypres salient. Mk IVs were used in Third Ypres 1917 but not in battles for the village of Passchendaele in late 1917. Robert |
