We had our first game yesterday playing these rules and had a few questions. Why in the sequence is it Prussian move and then French fire (that part I understand) but then the Prussian fire and French move? It would seem it would be the same where French move then Prussian fire like it was in the first sequence. I know the optional rules have 2 phases with simultaneous movement but was just wondering for those who have played and enjoy these rules. More questions to follow. |

You're asking a designer question. I don't know if he ever addressed that question in his writing. |

The Original Died for Glory rules published in the Courier had French Move/Prussian Fire – Always assumed the chart in the Glossy version made it look like they reversed it based on keeping national sequence in 2 separate columns We play that the French move and then the Prussians fire |

Think of those two phases as ACTION Phases where a unit can either move OR fire. Those two phases (5,11) are considered simultaneous. A unit may move in both phases, move and then fire, fire and then move, or fire in both phases. |

Thanks guys! It was interesting considering the "optional rules" I had seen in the rule book but we tried playing it the regular way the first time. I knew I'd get some good points on this site. |

I'm the co-author of THEY DIED FOR GLORY. First off, I'm glad you played the rules and I hope you enjoyed them. To answer your question, the Prussians move and the French fire at the same time in Phase 5. The French can fire at any point during the Prussian move. In Phase 11, the Prussians fire and the French move at the same time. Again, the Prussians can fire at any time during the French move. It's not that the Prussians fire and then the French move. For example, let's say a Prussian battalion in line formation is 16" away from a French battalion. During phase 5, the Prussians move twice. The French can fire when the Prussians are between 16" and 13" away and again when the Prussians are beween 13" and 10" away (I'd suggest waiting until they are 10" away since they will then be at close range). Personally, I prefer the Simultaneous Movement sequence in the Optional Rules. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly at Burker1 (at) aol (dot) com. |

Thank you so much Robert! I will definitely email you with other questions. Your explanation was great…we just didn't understand Phase 11. |

I have played them for years following the sequence of play with no problems. There is a TDFG Yahoo group which the authors monitor. You should join because there are all kinds of color plates and scenarios. Including normal maps for all the scenarios in the rules. They are my favorite set of rules of any period. link |

" A unit may move in both phases, move and then fire, fire and then move, or fire in both phases." I Don't think that is correct. If the prussians intend to move twice, it must be in the SAME phase allowing movement. Likewise if they fire twice it has to be in the Phase which allows fire. Otherwise if it is just one move and one fire, the sequence is followed as normal………… I think. |
