I think Risk won this honor in a TMP poll. Axis and Allies, second.

Well, if you are asking to go into that range of painting, then I would say most of the games by CMON, like Zombicide Black Plague or Green Horde. Also they do a bunch of games called Arcadia Quest. Head over to coolminiornot.com and look at the games they do.

On Boardgamegeek games are ranked by voters. The rankings include many persons who are board gamers, not necessarily war gamers. If you look at the number of persons voting for games with miniatures Scythe is ranked number one with 31642 persons voting. The game uses a combination of miniatures and meeples. The games in 2nd and 3rd place have just a few miniature figures. These are Betrayal at House on the Hill and Blood Rage. The 4th game on the list which is the first game with all miniatures is Memoir 44 with 21480 voters.

If you look at miniature war games Memoir 44 gets the most votes followed by X-Wing and Star Wars: Imperial Assault.

Define miniatures?

If you mean unpainted plastics then see above.

If you mean games where the players paint up miniatures that may require some assembly then several games come to mind.

BattleTech

Star Fleet Battles.

There may be others, but those two are obvious candidates.

I believe a lot of naval games are being played on hexes using Ironclads or Wooden Ships & Iron Men.

Yes, BGG is the best place to look for the ratings for overall popularity.

Here on TMP, Wings of War won the final round of the what's your favorite poll back in March: TMP link

Round 3 had narrowed it down to these choices: TMP link

According to The Hotness on boardgamegeek.com, it's Gloomhaven. Plus, it has been the best selling board game for the past year or so acording to ICv2 and Cool Stuff Inc.

From my experience here on TMP, few members here are very knowledgeable about the modern board game scene, which has exploded the past two years. It's crazy how popular it has become, especially with Millenias.

BTW my family is not into Gllomhaven. We are more Star Wars Imperial Assault people.

Chess. Either generic chess pieces or hand-painted ones from the hundreds (if not thousands) of themed sets available.

However, if you're looking to get ideas for selling pre-painted board games like some other painting services have been doing, you can't go wrong with CMON's 'Zombicide' or one of the GW board games (e.g., 'Warhammer Quest Silver Tower,' 'Space Hulk,' etc.) when it comes to people willing to spend the big bucks.

These are not necessarily the most popular board games using miniatures per se, but they seem to draw the gamers or "discriminating collectors" with the most disposable income on places like EBay, especially if the minis are professionally painted by a miniature painting service like Fernando Enterprises.

Just take a look at how much these games can command. Even if you don't get the price you initially listed for, it's negotiable with the option for prospective buyers to make their best offers. You can then accept or reject their best proposals at your own discretion or even haggle (i.e., offer and counteroffer) and meet them somewhere in between to the mutual satisfaction of both the seller and the buyer.

I find it difficult to play chess with anything other than the classic pieces. The brain just seems wired for that.
