Just stumbled across a series of terrific videos on the construction and voyage of the French frigate l'Hermione on Youtube. Search Youtube under – "fregate Hermione". You'll be glad you did. B |

Very cool. That's a LOT of wood. Still, VERY cool. On a more practical side, I haven't looked up how much this project cost, but I bet it was a pretty penny--I know the organization I work for helped fund the construction of a Chesapeake skipjack (or something like that) back in the late '90s and that is a relatively modest-sized sailboat but I think the total cost was well over a million US dollars (the number 7 million keeps coming to mind, but I may be confusing that with something else). My wife and I went to see her in drydock while she was under construction, at Rochefort, south of La Rochelle. Very cool to see her where the original might have been. That was a great trip; we had rented an apartment in Paris but we took several short trips by TGV to places of interest (day trips to Rouen and Reims, 2 days for La Rochelle/Rochefort – staying overnight in a hotel near the aquarium in La Rochelle). |

Saw her when she was in New York in 2015. Very impressive. |
