We'll have to fall back on our Cod War experience then.

Doomed.

Mike Target29 Aug 2018 8:48 a.m. PST

I thought after brexit the world was supposed to be our Oyster, not theirs ?

foxweasel29 Aug 2018 9:06 a.m. PST

I think those French fishermen are being a touch shellfish if they aren't sharing nicely.

BrianW29 Aug 2018 9:55 a.m. PST

I'm sure the Royal Navy won't let some French fishermen skate on this.

Darrell B D Day29 Aug 2018 10:05 a.m. PST

Yep – we'll batter them….

BrianW29 Aug 2018 10:08 a.m. PST

They'll just flounder around, and nothing will come of it.

Well, let's just make sure we don't do it just for the Halibut!

StoneMtnMinis29 Aug 2018 10:22 a.m. PST

I think it is time this topic is shipped out to sea.

Dave

Sorry, it was the best I could come up with on short notice.

I knew something Smelt bad.

Personally, it sounds as though the OP was fishing for remarks.

cloudcaptain29 Aug 2018 11:49 a.m. PST

Time to shell the French if they are getting crabby.

Stryderg29 Aug 2018 1:34 p.m. PST

Those French have their tentacles into everything, or maybe it's the Brits that suckered them.

Didn't take long for this thread to jump off the deep end.

Korvessa29 Aug 2018 4:36 p.m. PST

Should make Blackadder happy.

15mm and 28mm Fanatik29 Aug 2018 6:02 p.m. PST

The frogs are just annoyed because you limeys can't even say "fish and french fries."

And "chips" are not called "crisps" either.

Thresher0129 Aug 2018 11:31 p.m. PST

Hope you guys get those F-35s operational soon, and the carriers complete their shakedown cruises.

Might have found a real use for them after all, when I was of dubious belief about that just a few days ago.

Thresher0129 Aug 2018 11:34 p.m. PST

I guess the real question is, will the Spanish Navy support them?

IIRC, they have a carrier too, and operational Sea Harriers to go with them, last time I checked. That must be galling to some (or is it DeGaulle'ing(?) – can't ever keep that straight).

Gaz004530 Aug 2018 12:08 a.m. PST

Lots of pro-French chatter on social media, the English being 'pirates' and 'thugs when they get together'…..and as lots of Spanish boats are tied up at the moment because of algae and jellyfish invasions, they could easily send reinforcements!!

advocate30 Aug 2018 1:32 a.m. PST

What a load of scallops.

The English and the French have been at war since before 1066. Since Napoleon, they've been fighting at a lower intensity, but still: Fashoda Incident, Concorde fiasco, the Falklands War (the French had supplied arms to the Argentines), and no doubt other things.

At least they were mostly able to put that aside for a few years while they handled the unpleasantness that boiled out of Germany in the 20th Century.

Old Wolfman30 Aug 2018 6:46 a.m. PST

Saw the news article about it on TV.

Im not sure you could really say we need an Aircraft Carrier to deal with France. After all, its only 20 miles away…I'm pretty sure our landbased aircraft could cover that distance with little difficulty.

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP31 Aug 2018 9:21 a.m. PST

Wellington would be happy.

Thresher0131 Aug 2018 12:09 p.m. PST

If your military is anything like ours, you need to trot out the new stuff, and give it a spin, to help justify the expenditures.

That's why F-22s were flying ops over Syria, when clearly there was no need for that. Seemed a bit foolhardy at the time, permitting the Russians to collect data on them from their jet fighters and ground radars.

Thresher0131 Aug 2018 9:54 p.m. PST

Looks like others are getting in on the fish/seafood analogies too:

"The Scallop Wars are No Red Herring….".

link

The arms race in the conflict is increasing, with slingshots being trotted out for use by the French, and apparently, at least one molotov cocktail.

Do you have rules for those too, David?

In the next link, there are a couple of nice maps which will be useful, as well as the "formation" the French vessels took to surround the British vessels.

The Daily Fail is barely better than The Sun, as source of objective information. Barely.
