OK – need to buy some brushes. Both art shops in town have closed down. Can buy those Humbrol ones but they are only OK. Don't understand Games Workshop brushes (they have weird names and non-standard sizes)… Where else can I get them?

Pictors Studio22 Aug 2018 5:50 a.m. PST

I buy them at the art supply store across the street from Phantom of the Attic in Pittsburgh or from Michaels.

Dick Blick. Many choices, but by far the best in quality and value are the Winsor & Newton Series 7 Miniatures.

I have a good local art shop but have fond Hobbycraft has a good selection of good brushes when I'm elsewhere. I'm not sure where you are but there is one in York and one in Stockton if either is close enough.

I don't trust the post with them so don't use the internet to buy.

I order mine from Kalish's Brushes online. Over 4 years and never disappointed. Great quality and not as expensive as W&N brushes, but just as good!

I get W&N brushes from Jackson's art supplies ( jacksonsart.com ) or Ken Bromley ( artsupplies.co.uk ). Both on line and specialist artists suppliers so brushes come safely packed and in perfect condition.

I have bought dozens from both and never had a problem. usually delivery in a few days too.

In the UK, where the poster is based, find a good art supply shop, Hobbycraft, or a wargames show.

Rosemary & Co. I prefer the no. 401 with long handles.

Amazon. I buy my Windsor and Newtons and Escodas individually, and some really good quality sets designed for miniature or wargaming painting. On Amazon.co.uk, type "miniature wargaming brushes". The second product that pops up is the exact set I've used for almost 2 years. There is also a maker of brushes in California (mail order) called Terkel. Great stuff, great prices.

foxweasel22 Aug 2018 9:36 a.m. PST

Second Rosemary and Co, excellent brushes and cheaper than Series 7.

I use Citadel brushes from the local hobby shop and Winsor and Newton from the local art supply store.

I also have 1" and 4" flat paint brushes from the hardware store, which I use for painting terrain. I just buy the cheapest of this type of brush.

Oppiedog22 Aug 2018 10:40 a.m. PST

Dick Blick. Last set of Windsor and Newtons lasted 3 years before they needed replacing.

AC Moore or Michael, there is one of each in my township.
Where isn't the issue, its my poor brush cleaning that makes them short living

Hobby store, Friendly Local Gaming Store or art store depending on how much I need them and where I happen to be

I hunt sable to make brushes, but since women stopped wearing fur coats it's been difficult to find any.

darthfozzywig for the win.

May I suggest volunteering at the coat check room of the opera or symphony? Just be sure that you can distinguish mink from sable from fox from fakes, and don't take too many hairs from any one stole or coat.

My good brushes from Dick Blick. My slop brushes from Hobby Lobby or Michael's.

Sir Walter Rlyeh24 Aug 2018 6:08 a.m. PST

My good brushes are W&N from Amazon. Since I mix a lot of paint, my mixing brushes are cheap ones from Ace Hardware. They call them detail brushes and sell them for a buck and a half. This helps me preserve the good stuff.

Green Tiger28 Aug 2018 2:12 a.m. PST

Thanks fellas – X42 – I am in York so will check out Hobbycraft…

bobm195928 Aug 2018 7:40 a.m. PST

These are great brushes:

…..and from a great company to deal with. (Can buy them face to face at the York show if you wait til next February!!!)

W&N series 7 are great if you are a "puller"…but on too many figures I end up having to be a "pusher"….and that wrecks the point (on any sable brush) so a cheaper option suits me better.
