….. horrific battle- "Death was all over the place"

"Alex Slitz | The Flint JournalJohn Landry, 85, in the kitchen of his Thetford Township home, Landry fought for the NAVY in WWII as a top turret gunner and as a ground soldier in the battle of Okinawa in Japan. Landry has never talked about his experiences during the battle of Okinawa until recently, when he decided he wanted to tell his story "I didn't talk about the war because I didn't want people to hear about it, " Landry said…."

How did he end up with a Marine unit as a "ground soldier?"
He wasn't a corpsman??

He claims he finished a tour in European theater as a turret gunner (British Coastal Command), was in San Diego as an instructor, got into fight with the shore patrol, and chose to go to Okinawa rather than be court-martialed.

But what is a first class petty officer doing "fighting in one of the fiercest battles of the war"?
