I'm sculpting a lot of Ottoman figures at the moment and current have some Janissary Sekban on the table. I've been working from the article in Vol. 2 of the Great Northern War compendium which has this plate from the author

However other depictions of Sekban show them as pretty irregular looking levies raised locally. Is the a distinction to be drawn between ordinary sekban and sekban attached to Janissary orta?

According to link

The provincial levies are mentioned as Levend-segban (corrupted into leymen). These must have been the Huntsmen of the Pashas, for they are distinct from the Segban Janissaries, and bore such inveterate hatred towards them that the provinces were repeatedly convulsed by their feuds.

Seems to be two kinds of Segban or Sekban. Those based in Istanbul and associated with Janissary Ortas and a more general militia raised by Provincial Pashas.

@clibinarium – sekhans / segban is a term for irregular local troops. E.g. Albanians, Leghis, Yoruks, Rayas, Bashi-bazouks etc

Sekhans were irregular infantry organised under governors and constituted the main provincial armies. In theory Sekhans were volunteer troops serving without pay in times of war or emergency. Although irregular it is mistaken to consider them in any way inferior to the Janissaries. Some units of Sekhans, especially the Albanians, performed as well as or better than the regulars in combat.

For the OP, why not also email Chris Flaherty via his web-page.

I've talked to him about a few odds and ends.

Hi Clibinarium:

Did you sculpt the Ottomans for Khurasan? If so, have you sculpted any other 15mm Ottomans for other manufacturers. I really like your sculpting style!

Hi Matt,

Yes I did the recent Ottomans that Khurasan realased, thanks for the kind words. The stuff on the table at the moment is 28mm though.
Haven't done any other 15mm Ottomans, though I am currently working on some more variants on the exsiting Khurasan figures this week.
