"Based on the true story of the Battle of Midway, a turning point in the Pacific theatre of World War II, the very expensive historical action movie (the budget is above $100 USDM as 'Deadline' reports) will chronicle the exploits of the soldiers and pilots at the heart of the conflict. The story follows the real soldiers and aviators who pulled off the unbelievable to turn the tide of the war in June 1942.

Woody Harrelson will portray Admiral Chester Nimitz, Patrick Wilson will play Navy Rear Admiral Edward Layton who was a key intelligence officer during WWII, Luke Evans is taking over the role of Lieutenant Commander Wade McClusky and Keean Johnson will play an Airforce radioman"

"Based on the true story of the Battle of Midway,.."

And the previous movie was based on what?

Midway is due for a remake. Looking forward to it. Like westerns, war movies are underrepresented in Hollywood. The more war movies the better as far as I'm concerned.

Woody Harrelson & Mandy Moore in Talks for Roland Emmerich's Midway
MIDWAYMANDY MOORE MOVIE NEWS ROLAND EMMERICH WOODY HARRELSON
BY MAX EVRY ON MAY 2, 2018

Stuart Ford's AGC Studios has acquired the international rights to Midway, to be directed by iconic filmmaker Roland Emmerich (Independence Day franchise, The Day After Tomorrow) from a script by Wes Tooke, and will introduce the film to buyers at Cannes. Deadline is also reporting that Woody Harrelson (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Mandy Moore (This Is Us) are in negotiations to join what will be an ensemble cast, and that the $100 USD million dollar movie will lens in Hawaii and Canada.

Based on the true story [[[ NO KIDDING }}} of the Battle of Midway, a turning point in the Pacific theater of World War II, the film chronicles the heroic and harrowing exploits of the soldiers and aviators who achieved the unbelievable to turn the tide of the war.

Produced by Emmerich's Centropolis Entertainment, Midway will be produced by Roland Emmerich, Harald Kloser (2012, White House Down, Independence Day: Resurgence), and Mark Gordon (Saving Private Ryan, The Patriot, Molly's Game). The film is in pre-production with principal photography to start August 16.

‎"Roland's track record and brand as a master of big budget action films is second to none and I'm highly confident ‘Midway' will make a big splash in the Cannes marketplace," said Ford.

Starlight Entertainment Group and Providence Entertainment Limited are financing Midway. U.S. and China theatrical distribution is already set with Lionsgate to release through its Summit Entertainment label stateside and Bona Film Group to release in Greater China. Creative Artists Agency (CAA) brokered the financing and distribution deals.

Universal Pictures released a big budget epic version of the event also titled Midway in 1976, which starred Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, James Coburn and Toshiro Mifune.

Just soldiers and aviators? No sailors in a naval battle? No marines defending the island? This does not sound promising!

You know, they could base it on John Ford's version.

What doesnt sound promising is Mandy Moore.

The '76 version insulted my intelligence so hopefully this one is a little better. It was such a let-down after Tora Tora Tora.

At least they haven't announced that they're going to make it more contemporary and diverse.

Yet.

Seeing names associated with sci-fi disaster films, full of "Boom! Swish!" effects, I'm afraid "Midway" might be full of massed Zero's and P-40's flying like Alien craft in "Independence Day," and battleships being destroyed like the world in "2012."

I mean, it IS history that more people should know, and I want it to be good--more like the "Longest Day" in form than the 1976 version.

But it's being put together by people whose appreciation of the intelligence of their audience is clearly not very high.

And if someone wants to drop 100M on a WWII story of miraculous proportions, it should be the Battle off Samar.

THAT, my friends, is the greatest moment in the history of the US Navy, and maybe in all naval history.

Hope it will be better than Michael Bay's 'Pearl Harbor.' That's not too much to ask.

It is when the director is Roland Emmerich, possibly the only director more sexually attracted to gasoline explosions than Michael Bay.

They did pretty well with CGI of the Battleships only to film a bunch of Newport class LST's and Spruance class DD's. Disappointing to say the least.

Nowhere like a wargaming forum to find people preventively dissapointed with a historical movie. By the way, it will suck. Probably.

Soulmage13 Aug 2018 10:34 a.m. PST

I'd be more interested in a Battle of Jutland movie.

goragrad13 Aug 2018 12:21 p.m. PST

Samar would make a great movie. And it would be nice to see more general recognition for the heroism shown there.

And that was actually my first thought when I heard about this. I anticipate a female or black guy to suddenly pop up somewhere in a heroic role with some witty one liners. Maybe in this PC version, the discussion of the battle's potential impact on marine wildlife will concern the opposing admirals? The American pilot Tom, who fell in love with a Japanese girl in the original film, could now be replaced with "Tammy" and this trifecta of rewriting history could be realized.

I won't even touch on what what they might do to Ensign George H. Gay.

Woody Harrelson as Nimitz. Will Justin Bieber play Spruance?

Thresher0116 Aug 2018 8:40 p.m. PST

I agree, Woody is just crazy!

Someone check the Admiral's pipe……..

Was surprised to see the original was made in 1976. Thought it was a bit earlier than that.

On tonight, on the tube, coincidentally.

Murvihill18 Aug 2018 6:31 a.m. PST

Midway is already a great movie. They should leave the subject alone, after all there are so many other good potential movies out there. How about "Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors" or "South to Java"? My first edict when I'm King of America is "You can only remake movies that suck."

Marc33594 Supporting Member of TMP18 Aug 2018 7:43 a.m. PST

Bill, don't be silly. Mandy Moore is playing Spruance.

Spudeus20 Aug 2018 9:25 a.m. PST

Woody gets a bad rap, but he's matured as an actor and I can see him being a decent Nimitz (he's even at an appropriate age).

Otoh, Emmerich directed The Patriot, which was ridiculous from a historical perspective but at least had decent action.

Bay's Pearl Harbor is something I've tried to excise from my brain with a laser beam on multiple occasions. . .
