"There's a new movie adaptation of Dune, the cult epic science-fiction novel series written Frank Herbet and his son Brian Herbet, ahead of us! Legendary Pictures bought the film rights a few months ago. And they just announced that Director Denis Villeneuve (who helmed Sicario, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049) will be in charge of the project. I'm fond of the book series. But I think the 1984 movie adaptation, though entertaining, didn't do justice to the series, so I definitely welcome this new adaptation! Let's hope the film won't disappoint…." link

Could be good?…what does it depend on? … actors? … budget? … script?

I like Denis' work but it's a tough thing to cram Dune into a feature film. A TV series would be better. |

Sicario? Sweet! The Arrival? Sweet! Blade Runner 2049? Crap… That would be enough for me to skip seeing this. I hope the reviews are good. |

Those Herbets better watch out, they might get sued by the Herbert estate for IP infringement… ;-) |

Javelin, I watched Bladerunner last night and it is unironically worse than the sequel. |

There's a lot of stuff in the book that makes it hard to do in a movie paced for modern audiences. So you'd have to cut out a lot, and even then it'd likely be a 3hr movie. I did enjoy most of the original Dune movie, except for the acoustic weapons. The 'weirding way' of fighting for the Bene Gesserit was martial arts, not magic guns. |

I liked David Lynch's approach to the material. Apparently, he hated working on the film, and had no interest in science fiction, which is too bad. He really realized the Byzantine-baroque twistedness of Herbert's distant future. That being said, I think that the book really needs more than a 2 or 3 hours, and should be a tv series. I never read any of the sequels, but it could work out to make each one a season of the tv series. |

I saw the original in the theaters as a kid. I enjoyed it then and then read the book years later and watched it again after hearing a lot of complaints about it. I still thought it was great. I agree that if you are going to get it all in a series would be better. As long as it covers just the first book. |

I keep falling asleep during Blade Runner 2049. |

I really like the Lynch version. Very, very odd, which I would expect humanity to be centuries upon centuries in the future. |

I like the original Dune movie and I hope this one is good. I love the new Bladerunner movie though. Probably have watched it 5 or 6 times. Gritty scifi that isn't over the top is rare. |

Thought Lynch's vision was okay, in some respects better than the TV mini-series which was truer to the book – which got the politics, but may be not the whole odd philosophical bits and pieces of Herbert's work. What Villeneuve does with the source material or is allowed to do is the big question. I really liked Blade Runner 2049. I guess we'll see – chances are it may not even happen! |

If you made a Dune TV series, you could take it through the second book. I wouldn't recommend going into the third, the series kinda jumps the shark at that point. Funny enough, Chapterhouse (book 6) is pretty readable. But books 3, 4 and 5 are awful. |

I would love to see Dune done as a series, so long as they don't go with the nuBSG romance crap. "I owe my allegiance to House Atreides, but I'm having a Sardaukar's baby! What will my real father, the Baron Harkonnen, think of me??" Tune in next week to "Real Housewives of Arrakis"! Regarding BR2049, it wasn't bad; it was just an hour too long, bloated with artistic conceit, and inflicted with a annoyingly-overwrought soundtrack. With some aggressive editing, it could definitely go from "meh" to awesome. Just not as it now stands. |

Can't be worser than Lynch's. |

I'm not sure I would serialise the Dune books – they do get 'worse' as they go along. And I think more impenetrable as regards any kind of film or TV adaption. Did anyone watch the Children of Dune mini-series? |
KJdidit | 14 Aug 2018 6:48 a.m. PST |
Children of Dune was pretty lackluster, though the first part (covering the events of Dune Messiah) was OK. Really disliked the actor playing Leto, and Susan Sarandon exhibiting her extreme lack of acting ability made several scenes cringe-worthy. If you don't see it, you'll not be missing anything interesting. |

Watched the Dune mini-series and thought it was okay, but somewhat lacking in the character – never got around to Children of Dune seems like I didn't miss anything. |

That being said, I think that the book really needs more than a 2 or 3 hours, and should be a tv series. I never read any of the sequels, but it could work out to make each one a season of the tv series. Yeah, based on Altered Carbon and the Game of Thrones series, any modern book needs a full 13 'hour' episodes (45-50min, depending on ad space) to tell most of the story in the book. And Altered Carbon needed some trimming to fit, though most of that was reducing the number of characters to something the average TV watcher could keep up with. |
