….Hemsworth Over Budget Disputes. "Star Trek 4 could be in for a major shakeup. The upcoming Star Trek sequel (one of a few Trek projects in development at Paramount Pictures) was set to feature the return of Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk in a time-traveling adventure that would see Chris Pine's James T. Kirk teaming up with his deceased father. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, both Pine and Hemsworth have exited talks to star in Paramount's upcoming Trek sequel after salary negotiations fell apart. The project is set to be directed by S. J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones, Succession), the first woman to direct a Star Trek film in franchise history. Deals for the rest of the cast members, including including Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg and John Cho are expected to make, which puts Star Trek 4 in one seriously tricky position. Do they make a Star Trek movie without Captain Kirk? Can they get away with recasting the character and his father, who was introduced in the prologue of 2009 franchise reboot? Both of those scenarios are all but impossible to imagine, especially without the star power of the superhero headliners (Pine co-stars in DC's Wonder Woman films, while Hemsworth leads Marvel's Thor franchise)…." How are they going to explain the missing Chekhov? |

I don't remember Thor being in a ST movie. And Kirk's father? Must of just blocked that bit of time travel out. I guess ST needs some more stars to get a release over the $400 USD million mark. Maybe, the producers could get Josh Brolin to be a reoccurring villain? |

You say, "Star Trek 4" as though there has been a "Star Trek 3"--other than "The Search for Spock" of course. |

Pitch it like this: Star Trek 4: The Search for Kirk. Kirk and Chekhov are lost on some secret mission. Spock is put in command of the Enterprise, and they go looking for their missing officers. Adventures are had: Klingons, Romulans, whatever -- go for it. They find Kirk's and Chekhov's graves, exhume them, and do DNA testing on the unrecognizably rotted remains. They confirm that it's them. With all due ceremony, they bring flag-draped coffins back to Starfleet Command. Decorations all around, and Spock is promoted to Captain. You're welcome. |

Problem easily solved with a "disfiguring transporter accident" at the beginning of the film to replace the actors. (Most in the audience would just shrug and accept it.) Heck, you could get away with all kinds of appearance/gender modifications… ;-) |

That's the problem with entitled actors. Once their heads get too big they demand more money and hold a franchise hostage. Since there are already three films with this cast, maybe it's time to reboot ST again with a whole new cast of relative unknowns. I mean, you don't see Star Wars going beyond three movies, which makes it unlikely Daisy Ridley and John Boyega are going to ask for more money than they're worth because what else are they known for outside of SW? |

It's simple economics. Hemsworth and Pines are in demand actors who can command considerable salaries now. Wouldn't you demand that you be paid sum that you want too? It's unfortunate that they have the ability to shutdown a franchise but that's the price of playing this game. ST movies can command a nice slice of the movie market share and Pine and Hemsworth are A+ list actors now. I would agree with the rule of three argument. Sign them up for 3 flicks at a set price. Run them through and be done with it. Then open the "captain's chair" for the next soon-to-be-popular actor/actress and start again. |

To be fair it's not like it hasn't happened before: The whole reason Kirk became an Admiral was because the first Star Trek movie started out life as a pilot for a new TV series (Phase II), they didn't think they could afford Shatner as a series regular so they promoted him to Admiral to appear as an occasional guest star, with a replacement Captain as series regular. |

Hadn't heard that about Shatner. Thought he was signed on as Captain with Decker as his exec – playing almost exactly the role of Will Riker. Nimoy was going to pass, and the CO of the Epsilon 9 station was supposed to play his replacement. |
