link WASHINGTON — Vice President Mike Pence promoted a proposed Space Command on Thursday as "an idea whose time has come" in comments at the Pentagon to unveil a few more details about President Trump's plan to create another military force, this one for outer space, and for it to be in operation by 2020. Mr. Trump's space dreams still have to go through a divided Congress to come true, but initially reluctant Pentagon officials have lined up behind the proposal and now say that they will do what they can to bring it to fruition. "The time has come to write the next great chapter in the history of our armed forces, to prepare for the next battlefield where America's best and bravest will be called to deter and defeat a new generation of threats to our people, to our nation," Mr. Pence told an audience at the Pentagon. He called for Congress to allocate an additional $8 USD billion for space security systems over the next five years. Mr. Trump, for his part, posted on Twitter on Thursday: "Space Force all the way!" But that may be a tall order. The administration cannot just create a Space Force on its own; it has to go through Congress, where critics abound. |

Should have already had one along with Bases on the Moon and Mars. We are falling behind everyone now. |

Why is this such a big deal? Astronaut Kelly was just on the tube, opposing it, but he's not living in the real world. Space will be a battlefield, just like in any other. We're not dealing with 1914/1915 era pleasantries as pilots just fly by and salute or wave to one another. He needs to get a clue, especially in the era of satellite killers, and hypersonic missiles. We need "Rods from God" orbiting high overhead, on call when needed to react quickly and decisively to flashpoints around the globe. |

Sorry Nashville, but SBminisguy beat you to it by over six weeks on this recycled "news": TMP link I'm all for it because how else are we supposed to have "Starship Troopers"? |

Rods from God have about a 30-min call time, since you need to have one just about on the opposite side of the planet for minimum speed loss (and maximum boom). Not to mention a certain minimum size. About 5kg, to avoid burning up. And that hits with about 10x it's weight in TNT, assuming an 8kps impact velocity. |

We need a space force. Space needs to have people with a vested interest to lobby for space operations. When I was a kid the trip to the Moon was only supposed to be the start. We should have large permanent space stations, Moon base, and Mars landings by now. Mike Bunkermeister Creek Bunker Talk blog |

Space is the ultimate high ground. And if we don't have it, who should? Russia? China? The UN? I hope not. |

Someone, I think it is the Chinese, are planning to capture an asteroid, and bring it back to Earth. What could possibly go wrong? Time may tell…….. |
