Best way to win is not to start.

They took Canada as part of the treaty ending the SYW. If they'd given most of it back to the French, we'd have been upset--even furious--but we'd have still needed British help against the French and Indians.

Once the actual fighting starts--well, they made mistakes, but so did we. But they were at the end of a long supply line, and didn't have as much at stake.

They killed Mel Gibson's son. It was all downhill from there.

When the French (and then the Spanish and then the Dutch) joined the war it went from a rebellion in the colonies to an existential threat to Great Britian and her empires existence. The Americans were happy to establish their their democracy (flawed but evolving) by threatening Britian's (flawed but evolving) democracy. Not the only reason but one that is often overlooked.

Some lack of support within the British Government where some saw it as a war against fellow Englishmen. See Charles Fox and Edmund Burke.
Britain was a bit over tasked on multiple fronts, and was in a period of decidedly inept military leadership. See Burgoyne and others.

At the time, the colonies were also more of a burden than an asset.

They made the beer guy mad, so he put on a mask and ran from roof top to roof top.

Then they hanged that Andre guy.

Or something.
