Got the rules, got the figures and game mat. Does anyone have ideas for building an arena? I envision a backdrop for 1 side rather than a full circle or oval

Some people buy the Playmobil arena, usually off ebay or someplace where they can get it, well, cheap. It does look nice.

For ideas, Matakishi's Teahouse has done various periods, including gladiators. Here's the link: link

Good luck, and let us know what you come up with. I'm interested in gladiators myself, off and on.

Do you know anyone who works on a loading dock?
Ask him to save the cardboard reels that strapping tape comes on. I had one for years that I never used that was about 18" in diameter.

Alternately, try a carpet store and ask for the reels. Probably they just ship them back.

I second the Playmobi Arena.

Atlantic did make a very nice arena for 20mm but it's rather expensive now.

There is also the Marx 'Ben Hur Playset' buildings that have been recast.

Both Playmobil and Marx would work for 28mm, but the Playmobil is nicer (pre-coloured, made much better, etc).

Thank you for the suggestions. I got play mobile: $55 USD direct from them, free postage.

Got the Playmobile arena together and it looks good….except I have to replace those 2 play mobile men dressed as an emperor on top of the arena. Anyone else found a good replacement?

Grand Manner makes a goddess statue that might work well.

That looks good, but given the size of the arena a 40mm figure would probably look best

Check out shops that sell fish tank accessories! There are often all sorts of ancient era types of accessories – from statues to buildings.

54mm or 60mm Roman/Greek toy soldiers would work! Spray paint them with "stone effects" spray paint and they will look like statues.

Italeri makes (made) a set of 54mm Gladiators. That would be interesting for statues in an arena.

Marx (Louis Marx Co.) made a Ben Hur playset with Gladiators and recasts are still made and sold.

There are lots of others, as well.
