But the movie was based on the book Killer Angels. And that moment (and many others) were not included in the book. To include all important moments of the battle into the movie would have made the movie way to long.

To get all the important moments the film would have been nearly as long as the real thing.

Some events would have been either logistically impossible or down right dangerous to film too, like the part played by Union Artillery in stabilising Meade's front from Longstreet's attack on the 2nd Day.

I think it would be possible to produce a documentary on the battle of Gettysburg which could tell the story of the battle within a three hour time frame. That wasn't what the producers of the movie wanted to do, and in this instance I cannot fault them.
