Summarized from "Tom Custer Ride to Glory"

Just after the Civil War he is on a boat bound for occupation duty in Texas. The train is very crowded. A couple of war profiteers are next to him bragging about how much money they made during the war and complaining about all the solders taking up all the room.
"Tom turned to his friend sitting next to him and began to expound on the virtues of his army greatcoat, not placed on the seat next to the two prosperous farmers. Tom went on to relate how he could never be parted from his coat even though he had used it to cover another comrade inflicted with small pox. The eavesdropping farmers quickly left…"
Next morning Tom was stretched out enjoying the room to himself.
