"4 de agosto de 1806, a las nueve de la mañana, en el fondeadero del río Las Conchas reina un movimiento extraordinario. Decenas de pequeñas embarcaciones se aproximan a la ribera provenientes de la Colonia del Sacramento, venciendo a favor de una neblina propicia pero habitual en el invierno local la dificultad de cruzar el río vigilado por los ingleses.

Según cuenta don José Espina, capitán del Fijo de Dragones de Buenos Aires, la flotilla que zarpó de Colonia el 3 de agosto estaba compuesta de seis sumacas y goletas armadas, seis cañoneras del Rey, tres lanchas particulares armadas y diez transportes.

Las sumacas eran embarcaciones para la navegación de cabotaje, de poco calado, dos palos y construcción rudimentaria, tenían fondo aplanado y aparejo de goleta o de bergantín. Estas naves estaban armadas con cañones de a 18 o de a 24 y otras piezas menores…."
