I'm in the process of converting up a couple of German Schutzpolizei squads for use in WW2 skirmish games against eastern European partisans and such. I've already got some SS Cavalry, captured French tanks, and other troops and equipment used in internal security operations on hand. But a group of police would add some interesting diversity to the collection. I started with Warlord plastic Blitzkrieg Germans and used a Dremel to remove the y-straps, the gas cape bag, and one of the ammo pouches. The only field gear, aside from the remaining ammo pouch, was a breadbag and canteen. I added a head wearing a WW1 M16 helmet (from the Warlord Finn range) and a Soviet Mosin Nagant rifle. I'll probably use Soviet weapons for the NCO's SMG and for the squad machinegun as well. I'm pretty happy with the basic conversion, but am stumped as to the color.
I know what color a Schutzpolizei should be. But I can't find a good color match.
Here is the color I am trying for: link Do any of you have any suggestions for a color match from a major paint brand or any insight as to how to mix this shade of blue-grey? Thanks all! |

Just going from the screen I'd say Vallejo German Uniform 920. Which I think is WW1 Uniform colour. |

The Vallejo German Uniform paint is spot on for WW2 era feldgrau…..or at least one of the most common shade as the actual color of German uniforms varied wildly. But it does not have enough blue in it to pull off a police uniform. I've also tried their German "field blue" which is great for Luftwaffe troops, but again is off for what I need. |

I mix my own colors more often than not, and to get that rather interesting shade I think I'd start with luftwaffe Feldblau and add chromate green until I approached the desired shade. Good luck |

I think Rich may have your solution. To my eye, your pictures have a distinct greenish tinge to them. Good luck and please post some pictures when you have some of them completed. Jim |

Thanks for the tip. I'll try that tomorrow and see how it turns out. Later in the war police units sometimes wore army uniforms with police insignia. That would make it easier. But my Ostfront figures are from the 1941-2 period, plus I want them to stand out. As for game stats, I'll just run them using the Osttruppen rules. And yes, ill post pics once I nail down the color. |

The brown collar and cuffs will help them stand out as well. |

They also often (although not always, especially late in the war) wore black painted helmets. link So, yes they will be a very visually striking unit when done. |

I doubt that partisan hunters Would maintain a full dress uniform in the field for long. Fading, Mud and dust, and personal alterations would make these guys a bit different than the ones wearing the uniform you show on parade. |

Just a few suggestions and have benefit of being cheap. Delta Ceramcoat #02536 Medium Foliage Green seems like a pretty good match from the bottle. Another possibility is DecoArt Forest Green. Delta Ceramcoat Forest Green is a bit lighter than DecoArt and also a possibility. And lastly take a good look at Apple Barrel Gloss # 20648 Mossy Green. All are hobby craft paints and should be in any good craft store, like Michael's, and some Walmarts. They are acrylic, two ounce bottles and usually can be found for a buck or less a bottle so cheap enough to play with. |

Thanks for the info on the helmet: I wasn't aware of it. |
