I got to wondering about old D&D spells appearing in the current edition. So I went a digging to see what was still around. Seems there are quite a few.

So out of any edition, what is your favorite spell?
For me it has always been good ol' Otto's Irresistible Dance.
The old drawing of the tap dancing Umber Hulk alone shot this one up there for me. Plus in game it is Irresistible.

Back from before it became "Advanced".
I loved fireballs. We were not very sophisticated.

"Leomund's Tiny Hut". Because it was always fun to say in AD&D.

I see it is around in 5th. That's cool.

Leomund's Tiny Hut I use almost every game in the campaign.
Until I went up enough levels to get the mansion!

I stopped after AD&D and went to an easier more playable system

Having said that in the current crop of D&D 5th edition spells – I can image this as an important spell

Snilloc's Snowball Swarm
link

"A flurry of magic snowballs erupts from a point you choose within range. Each creature in a 5-foot-radius sphere centered on that point must make a Dexterity saving throw. A creature takes 3d6 cold damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 2nd."

Power word " Excrete". Pretty horrible if your DM plays it right.

Phantasmal Force

I like a spell combo my group called the Hoffa when cast on a target…

1. Flesh to Stone
2. Transmute Rock to Mud
3. Move Earth

No coming back from that one!!

For Basic and 1st ed I loved Sleep. 2nd edition I like the "WIld Magic" spell that had a d100 results table. Nothing like spraying a horde of Orcs with butterflies.

Hold Person comes in a close second, especially after it was used on me!

the ever necessary Purify Water
the basic lil' Illusion
and good ol' Magic Missile

Charm Person. More as an aid to good roleplaying than being actually useful, you'd be amazed how often people will lend ypu things, feed you, or let you spend the night with them if they think you're best friends…

And fireballs, always loved fireballs.

Fear was probably my favorite spell, especially after our party's thief tried to steal a scroll from my bag one night. The scroll was of course protected by a fear spell (what did he think was on the note I passed to the DM?). The thief ran through the woods until he failed a dexterity roll and tripped on a tree root.

I was only a level-2 mage, so the thief easily passed his saving roll for not ruining his pants.

Sleep

Lightning Bolt was always preferred over Fireball, but even that could bounce back.

USAFpilot27 Jul 2018 11:59 a.m. PST

Most useful was Magic Missiles.

-quickest casting time
-no saving throw
-used to disrupt enemy spell casters

Magic Missile, earl and often!

I have one of Bored-Flak's targetting rings ^,^

Stryderg27 Jul 2018 2:15 p.m. PST

Some friends were playing a ridiculously over powered campaign (level 18 Paladin with gauntlets of ogre strength AND a girdle of ogre strength). They were being surrounded by a horde of orcs; no a bigger horde; no, still bigger. Mage casts lightning bolt, made a path through the horde about 10 ft wide. Thereafter, the spell was renamed: Part Orc.

Tenser's Floating Disk, which my first character wished to be permanent. (It was a Monty Haul campaign-- I needed some way to carry all the loot!) grin

Bashytubits28 Jul 2018 1:26 p.m. PST

The enlarge spell, because bigger is better.

Tasha's Hideous Laughter. Can cast as 1st level, and Because making werewolves fall to the ground in uncontrollable laughter is great!
