My good friend, the Housemartin, has posted a review and build of the Sarissa 28mm Roman Merchant Ship. He was suitably impressed with the product link

An excellent report! Thanks for sharing it.

I had envisaged the one w/ the swan's head… This would be more a "medium tonnage" I guess? Why does it not have a forecastle though?

These are the Sarissa kit straight from the manufacturer, I know very little of Roman civilian shipping, so I can'r speak to the design. They do look rather low in the water for sea-going voyages.

I am inclined to think its inspiration was the "Blackfriars I" ship or "barge," excavated in Londinium in the early 1960s -- and dated ca. 200 A.D.

Nighthawk,

Now that I think about it I recall a Time Team episode where they were excavating one in Belgium that was pretty close to this. Just a working boat, nothing fancy

Yes, Anton -- but "working boats" make the world go round, eh??!!

Dang-it, I miss "Time Team!" Not available here "across the pond!" frown

I subscribe to Acorn TV just for Time Team, there is a horrible Time Team America; don't spend the time looking for much less watching it

Saw how this model was used as a "river craft" in the "Fall of the Roman Empire" game @ "Fall In! 2018." May have to get one or two!
