Has anyone tried using a rattle can/spray can to base coat or undercoat a FOW vehicle or tank? I'm debating trying this before I invest in an airbrush.

Yes, but you want to make sure its a good quality primer and one that doesn't fill gaps. If it all goes sideways you may need to strip and retry.

I don't use "quality primer".
I use cheap $.99 USD Flat Black from Walmart. It's main advantage besides price is that it's a very fine coat that doesn't obscure detail.
Then I use Rustoleum or Krylon camouflage paint. Being camo, it's dead flat. There are several shades of khaki which can be either British or German.
Perfect match? Of course not. We're tslking about paint used outdoors in harsh weather conditions.
Dry brush, wash etc.

I've done dozens of FoW vehicles and never used an airbrush.

I avoid expensive "hobby" spray paints. They invariably fail me.

The Plastic Solider Company sprays give good results.

When I do spray prime I use the cheapo spray primer as well. Normally I just go with the Rustoleum Camo paint that Winston mentions as the primer and base coat all in one.

As an aside, anyone having issues getting Wal mart valu-cheapo flat white spraypaint? My Wal mart has been out of stock for a month. Flat Black is getting rare too!

Damon.

Yeah. My part of Pennsylvania too.
Can only find Gloss.

I am running low on the flat blat as well. I asked and they told me that the local Wall-Mart will be receiving a new batch on Tuesday. Down near me it is only 96 cents.

I bought some 99 cent primer spray cans from Home Depot a month or two ago, but haven't had a chance to use them yet.

I usually spring for the really pricey stuff from Orchard Supply, which can run as high as $1.79 USD.

PSC sprays are good. An airbrush becomes viable if you want to do airbrush painting techniques, for base coating WW2 tanks the return on effort and investment isn't there.

That depends entirely on the WWII tank in question. Some of those British tanks than need Bronze Green or some of the other unusual colors would benefit from an airbrush because of the likelihood of the right color being available in spray…

I wouldn't buy an airbrush to do undercoat. Any old cheap can of spray paint will do the job.

I do it all the time…..I've always "base coated" the vehicle in the primary (flat) color, and then painted the details/camo. I've had my Italian and US companies since the FIRST FoW and they're still great.

coopman28 Jul 2018 7:08 p.m. PST

As far as I know, the PSC spray paints are not available in the USA.

McWong7329 Jul 2018 3:06 p.m. PST

Then look for the appropriate tamiya rattlecan. I'd advocate that over the investment in an airbrush, and the time taken on the learning curve, if your goal is just priming and basecoats.

Don't get me wrong, I do all my basecoats onwards with an airbrush, but that's due tousing airbrush techiques and not due to colour accuracy.

Sure have and do. Usually Battlefront's spray primer(desert yellow).
