From Flower to Sapling?

Can a plastic flower become a wargaming shrub? Or maybe a small tree?

This is the stuff I'm talking about. It has MOST of the colors that I want, so all I need is to dry brush it with light terra-cotta colors (Mars-like) to catch the highlights. I've gotta say that the embossing on this material looks AMAZING. It almost looks like deeply cracked elephant skin when you hold it in your hands.

I love the name of it, "Imagine Chocolate":

I want to be able to roll it up to store away when not in use.

1) Does vinyl leather fabric need to be pre-treated with something before dry brushing? Spray painted?
2) What is the best paint to dry brush on this material?
3) Would it take a paint "wash"?
4) Does it need to be sealed with anything? Matte spray?

Great idea. I've never used the stuff, but I definitely want to know how it works out for you.

If it can be lightly spray-painted before the terra-cotta dry brush, I want to give some areas a slight blue-green (or blue-grey?) undertone, like on these photos of Mars.

I've spray painted marine vinyl. Takes forever for it to dry completely. In the meantime, it's tacky.

I tried with no avail to get acrylic paint to stick to vinyl, it peeled off readily and often and scuffed easy.

I know it is for plastics, but would Krylon Fusion paint work on vinyl?

This article has some suggestions.

Oberlindes

Wow! That's encouraging.

Thanks.

After dry brushing, I hope it ends up looking a little like this:

And this is what I meant about the hint of blues. It's even more noticeable when viewed from a distance:

The closest grey-blue I can find in Krylon Fusion paint is the Satin Twilight, seen here on the upper left:

Perhaps some swirls here and there if the Pewter Grey also?

Dan
PS. Rust-Oleum also has a Fabric and Vinyl spraypaint range that has a nice Medium Blue.

Dan,

When you complete this project, please post some pics. In fact, it would be great if you could post pics of each stage of the painting. I, for one, am very interested to see how this turns out.

Dave

PS: Before you start painting I think it would be smart to use a strong cleaner to remove any materials/coatings left over from the manufacturing process.

Even though the changes I'll be making to the material will be (I hope) subtle, and thus not too overly noticeable in photos, I still need to have my wife sign off on physically helping me with this.

But yes, as Oberlindes' link shows, the key seems to be using a good degreaser before doing anything else:

"Imagine Chocolate", huh? All I can imagine when I look at that is Naugahyde.

Cacique Caribe27 Jul 2018 6:13 p.m. PST

I had never heard the term "Naugahyde" until now. That's what it is, basically, but the manufacturers still need to come up with a name for each new brand or version of "Naugahyde".

Dang it Dan, you're making me feel old!

Lol. That was not my intention at all. I really had no idea what that word meant. It probably has less to do with age and more to do with not growing up in mainland US and having to learn English when I was almost in my teens.

I had to learn too much too quickly and some things might have been left out. :)

It may be regional. In the mid Atlantic region, back in the 1980's, everyone talked about Nauga ranching. Now it's llamas. they give a better return when you're trying to get to that 50% of income to qualify for the agricultural rate on your property taxes.

The wife has been traveling to DC a lot lately but says she's going to be in town this weekend and might be able to help me with hanging the fabric upright on a wire in the backyard while we do the degreasing and spraying.

All I need now is for the weather to be on our side too.

And now …

QUESTION:
Would these leather/vinyl shoe repair touch up paints work for dry brushing and highlights on the embossed vinyl fabric?

And this is the "adhesion promoter" they recommend for the final step:

Dan
NOTE: After adding all the costs, this is clearly NOT ending up to be the cheapest option for a game mat. But my biggest concern here is my own personal physical labor limitations. I might have to go instead with what a friend recommended long ago for a Mars terrain mat:
