I am putting together an OB for 2nd Trenton. I am having issues with the number of Hessians under Carl von Donop. The Osprey Campaign book shows he had five battalions (not counting the Jagers). Stryker mentions two battalions. But doesn't say if they were the only two. Other sources I have doesn't give a number. Does anyone know how many there were and/or has an OB they would like to share?

Novak also shows 5 Battlions. Interestingly, he also shows the 42 nd Foot assigned to von Donop.

Novak also just calls it the Princeton Campaign, so is this what you need?

If you need more, I have the book in front of me.

I see it on page 51. I missed it the first time a looked at Novak. I was looking for the name of the battle instead of the campaign. Still it doesn't mean they were at that particular battle.

Did you find any more on this? I believe David Bonk has a well written Osprey book on this subject. Is that the one you are referring to?

The reference to the 42nd turns, IIRC, on the unconfirmed presence of a group of recovered sick from 42nd in transit. Not the regiment. I recall this from a discussion on Rev List. Hope that helps.

My mistake. That was a reference to Princeton This was the discussion I recalled: link

To: robert a selig <robertaselig@…>Bob, I'll need to check my references on the 42nd… my recollection is that it was a company of replacements that just happened to be in Princeton. I'll get back to you in the next couple of days. David ==============================

Bob – thanks.
I wanted to emphasize that this group of highlanders sited by the rebel forces, could very well be from the 42nd. In early Oct. 1776, Dr. Mervin North of the British Hospital wrote his father that he had 1100 patients and most were from the Guards, 42nd and 71st Highlanders. An Oct. 31, 1776 strength report for the 42nd showed 138 men in the hospital. Assuming it took some time for these troops to get well and to collect enough for a unit to march to join the army, these could be the mysterious highlanders at Princeton.
Paul Pace late Captn 42d Lt Infy Compy.

However, Paul Pace lists the movements of the 42nd over the period thus:

Dec. 13, 1776 42nd Regt. assigned to Col. Donop's Hessian Brigade, and posted at Black Horse, New Jersey

Dec. 22, 1776 400 to 500 rebel troops attack small picket of 42nd Regt. at Petticoat Bridge near Blackhorse, N.J.

Dec. 23, 1776 Col. Donop with the 42nd Regt. and Hessian grenadiers attack and pursue American force at Mt. Holly, N.J.

Dec. 26, 1776 Following American attack on Trenton, N.J. 42nd Regt. withdraws to Princeton with Col. Donop.

Jan. 2-3, 1777 42nd Regt. takes part in Lord Cornwallis attack to Trenton, N.J. and Battle of Assunpink Creek. Next day marches to Princeton and Brunswick.

In the papers that Paul Pace has gathered relating to the 42nd over New Year 1776-77, I can only find reference to Donop having command of the Grenadier Battalions Linsingen, von Block & Minnigerode with the Jagers, plus Gren. battalion Kohler which on Jan 2nd 1777, Donop reported, "had also arrived with the corps of General Grant." That makes 5 units, 4 battalions and a jager company.
