That entire scene was cut from Star Trek TMP. In fact there was one version I seen where Kirk went out after Spock in the suit you see there and you could see the stage set holding up the Enterprise's lower hull. Kirk sees Spock launch, and when Spock comes back Kirk is in a different space suit.

Wow, I think the ones from "2001: A Space Odyssey", which came out 11 years earlier, looked even better than those. Sad. Dan
PS. I was afraid "alternative" was a reference to something else, as in another attempt to force other unnecessary ridiculousness on viewers:
