Some say that proper warfare "kicked off" when humans invented clothing that stayed in place in a discrete fashion when the wearer was active. Either way I'm not entirely convinced early Sumerians had enough metal to stud their cloaks and reinforce their shields. Proper Akkadians and their enemies would be nice too!

I suspect those shields only had a single boss in real life. In Sumerian art, the multiple bosses are someone's way of saying 'many' soldiers. (My opinion.) |

This could be basic artistic licence. There are also the limitations of the tools, the medium and maybe time. There also maybe a fundamentally different way of looking at things here. The depiction of depth in images is not straightforward. Nine bosses on a shield may even represent units deployed 9 ranks deep! The sides of the standard of UR are often not shown but they do appear to show animals with copper discs on them. |

Don't spoil the multiple boss shields as I really like them :). I still go with 9. Varied research still fails consens. Lovely range of figures. |
