"Two helicopters sit between Asia's two great powers. India is fast approaching a deadline to withdraw HAL Dhruv utility helicopters from the Maldives, which appears to be the result of mounting pressure from China. While the helicopters may seem insignificant, a withdrawal would be another sign of India's declining influence in the island chain, and coming soon after India weighed a military intervention there, and as China muscled its way around the Indian Ocean with a display of warships…." I'm not surprised either. Such activities are what *all* superpowers do. In Australia, China's real estate imperialism is a far greater threat. Cashed up Chinese nationals buying the country, one domicile at a time. Where will they stop? The local milk bar? The suburban dry cleaners? Or, horror!, the drive-in movie park?? |

Modern Warfare magazine has an interesting article from last month on a hypothetical future Indian-Pakistani war. There is a brief discussion of China's possible role in such a conflict. |

If this cartoon is to be believed (or is it supposed to be a government poster?) it looks like China has been "pushing" India for quite a while now. Dan

Imperialism supposedly died after WWII with the independence of the British and French colonies, but I guess rumors of its demise have been greatly exaggerated. |

Forget warships. Beware real estate agents. link The Chinese will buy the Maldives under the noses of the Indians. |

I am sure that many of us are old enough to remember the hand-wringing that occurred over the Japanese buying chunks of US real estate. |
