I was wondering if this is a good sci/fy show? I have seen the dvd's cheap and wondered if I should pick them up and give it a watch? Your thoughts?

An excellent show, but you have to pay attention as the plot lines are complex.

Another good one is Killjoys.

The Expanse is excellent – having read the books helped

The other one to look out for is Altered Carbon

Seconded on Killjoys – in fact I reckon it's one of the best sci-fi series ever. Up there with Blake's Seven

Yes, very good show. Surprised SyFy even aired it ! Compared to some of their usual drivel. I like Killjoys as well …

Very disappointed SyFy didnt pick it up for a fourth season

DesertScrb30 Jun 2018 8:17 a.m. PST

Yes, I highly recommend The Expanse! Each season gets better.

I haven't read the books, and that didn't lessen my enjoyment of the series.

Amazon grabbed it. Good riddance to Syfy.

They aren't bound by episode length requirements anymore and can stick to the books more closely now.

I am supper happy Amazon picked it up. I hope they can take it to the next level.

The Expanse is one of the best scifi shows ever on TV.

Killjoys is a fun romp and better than I thought it would be considering the title and the first episode or two. Not in the same league as The Expanse but still good.

The Expanse is very good. I'm looking forward to watching it on Amazon.

As a fan of both the TV show and the original series of novles, I can't recommend it enough. WizKids made a board game based on it, Green Ronin is working on a pen-and-paper RPG, all we need to do is convince someone to make a line of ship miniatures. I'd kill to have an MCRN fleet on my tabletop!

IMO, The Expanse makes a better show than book. I also think it's light years better than most other episodic SF shows currently out there. Quality-wise, it's on par with the re-booted BSG.

The Expanse is great, just don't expect a happy romp through space. This is a very dark universe. I loved it, but we Brits tend to like our SF more dystopian.

Sergeant Paper02 Jul 2018 10:40 a.m. PST

I hated it for the same reason. It seemed like the author is a one-trick pony on the order of M. Night Shyamalan… he can't tell a story without killing nearly everyone involved and vast percentages of humanity as well.

My brother raved about these novels, my friend raved about them too, so i finally sat down with them and read Books 1-5. Each to his own, but I thought he jumped the shark about halfway through Book 1. And it never got better. Too many actually interesting bits tossed away. Nope.

Err, most of the main (and minor) characters are still alive. SPOILER – and the strike on Earth does not occur till the fourth book or so and nothing like it is repeated.

chromedog11 Jul 2018 5:07 a.m. PST

S1 is a slow burn and takes 5-6 episodes for the various elements to come together (there's multiple character story arcs with their own info that merge into the main story.

It picks up after that.

Sergeant Paper, most of the main characters are still alive as of book 7. Most of the Earthers are also still alive, too (despite book 4).

I enjoyed it, but I'm the statistical outlier who doesn't like most of the genre "tv" on our screens atm. Most of it is comic book related, and from the major two labels, so it's just going to be more meh anyway.
