If someone were to someday create a Mount Rushmore-style monument to miniature wargaming, who should be depicted on the monument? (Assume room for five.) |

Perry twins. You'd only need to put one of them up, leaving room for four more. |

Gygax. We wouldn't have dungeon crawls without him. (Not to slight Arneson, either.) I'm thinking this monument needs more heads… |

Napoleon, Caesar, Cetshwayo kaMpande and Neville Chamberlain- without whom we wouldn't have our most popular periods to game in. |

Wells, Scruby, Featherstone, certainly; probably Phil Barker and Fletcher Pratt for the other two. And wouldn't that make a great paperweight even if no mountain is available for use. |
Winston Smith | 28 Jun 2018 5:56 p.m. PST |
Phil Barker did more than anybody to popularize Ancients wargaming. Allowing Romans to fight Vikings or Swiss doubled the likelihood of such armies being manufactured. If the Khitan Liao could only fight its contemporaries, what is the likelihood of such figures being produced? Likewise Burmese, Mycenaean, Nikephorean Byzantine, Mauryan Indian…. This is not to say that all the editions, revisions, Amendment Sheets ("What's the postmark on your sheet? Mine says ‘must' while yours says ‘cannot'….) didn't drive me nuts. I basically had to learn a new game 3 times a year. That of course puts me one up on the infamous generals who didn't survive 1.0 |

Wells, Scruby, and Featherstone certainly. And we might want to leave it at three. Second tier? The Freds--Jane and Vietmeyer--I think. But it's hard to imagine Peter Young not being there. Anyway, with 3D printing, we can all have our picks in some portable scale. |
