The contract is for 16 new F-16 Block 70 aircraft, which will be delivered to the Kingdom of Bahrain for use in its air force. The Arab country in the Persian Gulf will be the first to acquire the F-16 Block 70 fighter jet, the newest and most advanced model in the F-16 family. link |

The F-16 is a great "jack of all trades" aircraft and is great for that region where the only operator of 5th generation aircraft is Israel and they aren't going to be attacking Bahrain. My father worked on the F-16 development team and the criticism back then rivals what is being said about the F-35 now. Today, after 40 years of flying and over 4,000 produced, the F-16 is still going strong. |

I have always loved the look of the mighty F-16!

Too bad the F16 is now just as expensive as the F15. The original plan was to have about 3x F16s for every F15, cost-wise. |

F16 is now just as expensive as the F15. Not quite. $1.2 USD billion for 16× F-16's translates to $75 USD million apiece. The most recent sale of F-15's was to Qatar for 36× Eagles in a deal worth $6.2 USD billion or $172 USD million apiece. But I am a bit surprised by how much the costs of modern fighters have skyrocketed. I remember when Commander "Stinger" Jardian chided "Maverick" for taking unnecessary chances with the (in 1986 dollars) $30 USD million Tomcat in 'Top Gun' and thought that was an insane amount of moolah. Not to mention the "relatively low cost" F-35 is supposed to be a lot cheaper than the F-22 as the "Lo" end aircraft in the Hi-Lo mix. |
