Is the Flea Market going to be in the same location as Cold Wars? If so has anything been addressed on the lighting? Inquiring seller would like to know.

I would recommend bring your own lights. The theater where the flea market is held is rather dark in places.

Grimmnar24 Jun 2018 2:25 a.m. PST

If it is upstairs it will be dark.
Funny enough, according to the Flea Market rules no extra lighting is allowed.
But I loved the irony one seller did on Saturday by bringing a table lamp from his room. :-)

Yes, Wally's Basement, AKA the "Flea Market" will be in the same location, the Showroom, as at Cold Wars 2018.

The convention director confirmed that fact on another thread.

I believe they are working with the Host to bring in additional lighting. My impression is that the Cold War staff was caught unawares by the situation, else they too would have addressed the poor lighting. What the lighting response will bear remains to be seen. At the very least they might have put in working lights into each fixture.

The other issue is having well marked and instructions for utilizing the elevator that services this area for attendees with physical limitations.

Unconfirmed reports are that they will be cutting holes in the roof to let in additional light. Afterwards there will be a large blue tarp placed over the openings. (Yeah, like they'd ever put a blue tarp on the roof of the Host.)

WarWizard24 Jun 2018 5:45 a.m. PST

Lugging bins up the stairs was quite the workout.

Wackmole924 Jun 2018 6:00 a.m. PST

Those aren't holes, but breath tube for the thing that is the "host"

Be grateful we still have a roof. One more set of improvements by the con directors, and the flea market will be midnight, outdoors, and in the rain. Probably the only thing saving us so far is the cramped parking.

But yes, as both buyer and seller, I intend to bring a flashlight.

But yes, as both buyer and seller, I intend to bring a flashlight.

THose headlamps on stretchy headbands might work well, freeing up both hands to fondle the merchandise.

Ploogak24 Jun 2018 7:43 p.m. PST

It's not the cramped parking Robert, it's because the patio isn't done. If it were done you wouldn't be able to park there and, weather permitting, it might make a nicer place for Wally's than the Showroom. Just the day sessions though. :)

Wear a headlight on your hard hat and think of it as urban caving.

TSD10124 Jun 2018 8:41 p.m. PST

More worried about the climate control working than the lighting. I can always bring my own flashlight.

"Unconfirmed reports are that they will be cutting holes in the roof to let in additional light."

Well, that's not being very considerate of the vampires attending.

Lord Ashram25 Jun 2018 8:54 a.m. PST

I am hopeful that they add some lighting, because the lighting at Cold Wars was… so, so… SOOOOOOOO bad. Like, I went in there, and I couldn't see anything. I couldn't see ANYTHING. It was bad:(

kalgaloth25 Jun 2018 6:07 p.m. PST

I swiped a floor lamp from the lobby last convention because I was selling painted figures and the lighting was terrible. Really hoping this is addressed and corrected.

I think that at HMGS' request, the Host is attempting to address the darkness. I suspect that only limited improvements can be made, given the existing infrastructure. (I'd be delighted to be wrong on this!) Alternative light sources for buyers and sellers still seem prudent.

I'm curious to see if any improvement in the somewhat ratchety and well-hidden freight elevator will be made to help protect our aging often not well-maintained knees and backs.

From what I remember from Cold Wars, that are isn't wheelchair accessible is it?

DaleWill Supporting Member of TMP27 Jun 2018 8:10 p.m. PST

Wow, that was bad grammar.

Is Wally's basement wheel chair accessible?

rmcaras Supporting Member of TMP27 Jun 2018 9:03 p.m. PST

DaleWill – not easily.

Technically, the Showroom is serviced by a large service elevator. It has to be, as they serve food/drinks there and THAT has to come from the kitchen.

I have not found, personally, where that service elevator opens on the first floor. But a friend who was selling at Cold Wars, apparently found it [after the fact, he schlepped his stuff up the stairs].

I have put this question to the Convention Director, directly via the HMGS.org message group, Joby Miller [Ploogak – TMP name above] but he has not responded [though its been 5 days] yet. I also hope that unlike at CW [due to being surprised by this location change] the process and location to this mythical elevator is well marked and publicized.

So my best answer, hopefully is yes, because like you, I have mobility limitations.

Lets hope Joby sees this or my message to him sooner than later.

altfritz28 Jun 2018 3:03 p.m. PST

Where is "the Showroom"? Is that the room with the stage?

TheWarStoreSweetie28 Jun 2018 3:05 p.m. PST

The service elevator entrance on the first floor is through Hobby U (where registration used to be).

rmcaras Supporting Member of TMP30 Jun 2018 5:05 p.m. PST

Thanks WarStoreSweetie! That places the area to recon.

Now I hope it is marked and any procedures necessary are communicated perhaps in the guidebook.

And manned at the necessary times!

That means using the handicap ramp that feeds into the lobby area from the front handicap parking/parking lot will be prime real estate!

I heard the old front entrance would be closed, but I think the handicap ramp will still be available. Because that would be the only handicap access to the main floor lobby area.

PS wasn't that named the "Wheatland" Room in the past?

TheWarStoreSweetie04 Jul 2018 10:43 a.m. PST

I think so. I have my own names for the rooms at the Host based on what was or is in them….IE Reg. Room = Wheatland; Hobby U = Heritage (although it is now in the Wheatland Room). Hawks Room -- Right by the doors, etc. Not exactly helpful if you are looking at an "official" Host Map.
