I've got some Peter Pig German engineers with Aachen Mine detectors.

Any clue how the backpack is painted? The Dragon kit shows brown leather straps and brown leather over the top. But not sure what the rest looks like.

link You can also do a Google image search for the Minensuchgerat Aachen 40.

I did but I wasn't able to find an image of the full pack

Thanks for the German. I found this:

Looks like a cloth case.

WWII U.S. Handbook on German Military Forces describes the pack containing batteries and search coil for the Frankfurt 40 detector as "canvas". There is also a photo of a Frankfurt 42 set which illustrates the full pack. No color photos, but the equipment looks quite dark (but not black) against a light background-- maybe some shade of feldgrau?

not sure of the color seems darker than the field gray

If in doubt, some sort of dark green is usually a safe bet.

Interesting did any body check the link in sundance's post?

Its a metal box like structure with a dark paint that looks like it could be charcoal grey.

I think it rather depends if the box was carried directly on the wearers back, or if it was stuck in a bag (the photos show both). The mine detector thread mentions that they were often just stuck in a pack (and if it was a Tornister, explains the leather of the Dragon model).

So it looks like you can paint whatever colour you want, brown, dark grey or dark green.
