Inspired by the Richard H. Berg best game poll, the similarly named Richard Borg best game poll. Which of his Commands & Colors style games is best? 1) Ancients 2) Napoleonics 3) Memoir ‘44 4) Battle Cry 5) Battle Lore 6) Tricorne 7) not a fan/ never played any/ no opinion/ Richard who? |

1 or 2 depending on my interest at the time. I just started painting 1/72 Napoleonics to play the game on a board with 90mm hexes. I love the game system. |

I left a few off the list by mistake, so I will add them now. 8) The Great War 9) Samurai Battles 10) Medieval I have only played Ancients, Napoleonics, and Memoir ‘44. My favorite is Napoleonics. Of the three it is the most involved. Memoir ‘44 is the simplest. |

I've played 1,2, and 3 and they are so similar as to be practically the same game. I think it works for 1 and 2 (more or less) but falls flat on 3 |

I've played 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, & 8 Enjoyed all of them. Ancients is my favorite then the AWI one. |

Aren't they all the same game? The pieces might differ but they all basically play identically. |

7. None. Dislike the system, but have played many once. |
Hobhood4 | 14 Jun 2018 3:23 p.m. PST |
1, 4 and 3 for me in that order. Most game 'fun' ever from these. Didn't like 2. Never played the others. Not worth replicating with figures though as I don't think it adds much to the gaming experience. |

4. Battle Cry (The original of the C&C games.) I've only played two of the other variants, and while I do like Memoir '44, I think the system better suits the limited communications and maneuvering options of the Civl War. I seem to recall reading about a possible AWI version, which I would likely snap up in a heartbeat if it followed the BC/M44 model and came with figs. Just not interested in the "block" approach of the C&C line. |

Oh ya, add Red Alert to my list, #11…? |
BrotherSevej | 14 Jun 2018 5:52 p.m. PST |
Really, just pick up the theme that interests you most. Another thing to consider is product support, if you want to go deep. Memoir 44 is the most expansive one, followed by C&C Ancients. |

Aren't they all the same game? The pieces might differ but they all basically play identically. The three I played are similar but there are differences. Memoir'44 is the simplest and therefore easiest to learn and teach others. Napoleonics has added features like 1) the ability of cavalry to retire and reform, 2) use of artillery in a combined arms with other units, and most importantly 3) the ability of infantry to form square. The engine which drives the game is the same but there are differences more than just the differences in theme and artwork. But you are correct in that if you can play one, you can play them all. Ancients and Napoleonics have about the same number of expansions. Napoleonics gets really fun with expansion #6 Epic, with a much larger game board to fight bigger battles. |

I own 2, 3 and 4 and think the game system is fun….but I have a hard time thinking of them as wargames when they seem to me to be more thematic games about war. |
Dexter Ward | 15 Jun 2018 2:10 a.m. PST |
4 – I liked the original ACW version best. 3 – Memoir 44 is Ok as well 1 – I never liked the rules for ancients for some reason Not played the others, but I hear the new Great War game in the series is very good. |

Ancients. Great series. Need to pick up Spartans then the Byzantine/Sassanid (which seems to be labeled as Medieval.) |

1 Ancients Epic is, IMHO, by far the best. But I am really enjoying 6 Tricorne., the AWI variant. Napoleonics has far too much ‘chrome' for me, which detracts from the simple game play which make the series so attractive. |

coopman | 16 Jun 2018 6:39 a.m. PST |
Mollinary, You could always "de-chrome" the Nap. version and it would then be more like "Battle Cry" Napoleonics. I do kind of agree with you. |
coopman | 16 Jun 2018 8:59 a.m. PST |
Even though I've had the C&C:A game and all of its expansions ever since they came out, I've never actually played it. I have played the heck out of "Battle Cry" and "Memoir '44". I've played a couple of "Tricorne" games & like it so far. Very hard for me to pick a fav, so I won't. |
ernieR | 16 Jun 2018 11:28 a.m. PST |
i've played 2 , 3 and 4 and liked them all . i really like the system , it's easy to move from one era to another because there are enough similarities in the rules , but there are also enough differences to feel like you're playing the period . Memoir plays fast enough that we can play 4 games in a typical evening (3 hours at the LGS), playing 2 scenarios and switching sides to give both players equal chances to win . we do find that both luck with cards and luck with dice can be very important to winning , but the games are always fun . |

2. Played in our annual Waterloo Day game here in Orlando over the weekend. Was able to get 3 games in at the Epic scale (8 players) to include lunch, BS and working in new rules… Hard to beat the C&C system from a pure fun aspect…but I am biased. Mike |
