I'm too the point of painting cavalry for my Battle of Almanza project and I have to decide on the number of figures per base? I can't make up my mind so I'm throwing it out there, what do you think? 2 or 3 per base? I also painted up some Commanders for the French and Spanish.

I would think number of figures per base would depend on the rule set(s) you will be using.

Haven't picked a rule set to use yet and most of the sets available use some sort of variation of 30mm bases whether they be 60mm wide or just 30mm.

If rules don't specify, then I would suggest 3 per base for heavy or battle cavalry and 2 per base for unformed, light cavalry.

Allows faster identification and slightly notes their roles.

The outlaw has it right, 3 per base is heavy cavalry and 2 is light cavalry.

DBx uses 3 for 'regular' cavalry and 2 for 'light horse'

I have since re-based all mine to 2 per base regardless because most other games use that basing system. It also helps stretch the gaming dollar for gamers on a budget, like me.

2x 10mm cavalry figures on a 30mm frontage is too sparse in my opinion. Even my 15mm are 2 to a 25mm frontage. I would go for three figures. They fit comfortably on the 30mm frontage and look as if they are in an appropriate formation for the period. I use 60mm bases and fit 6 "battle" cavalry on that frontage. To make it easy to distinguish, my dragoons have 5 figures on each base.

The trend is going towards 3 per base. So that is what I shall do. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Yes I also like 3 per for battle cavalry and 2 per for lights. Just because I like the looks
