Star Fleet Battles has a miniature of a Monitor ship. What was this ship used for? SFB does not have it listed as a Federation miniature, so who used this ship? Thank you for your help.

Monitors in SFB are a generic model used by all factions. They have tiny engines but lots of weapons and power, designed for planetary/static defense.

Freighters and Starbases are pretty much generic, right? Anything else?

Not that that can't change with ADB running amok on Shapeways… ;->=

Amok? Well, it is supposed to be a secret, but we are planning a release to celebrate our Anniversary Day on Shapeways (June 20). Fighters as you have never seen them before!

Yeah, monitors are 'coastal warships', they have stupidly large guns but little ability to maneuver.

They're about as generic as bases and freighters. Overall design is constant, internal fittings vary between races.

So, what it sounds like tom, and ADB correct me if I am wrong, but with the Monitor being slow and heavy armed, they are like the WSW 1 and WW 2 RN monitors and use for planet bombardment from orbit and not a planet defender ship?

The SFB monitors are planet defense ships. Firepower of cruisers but slow and poor power curves. That being said if you let one get close it will cook your ship easily.

Monitors exist to defend a planet while the bases are getting built (or upgraded), then they go to the next place they are needed.

If your pirates need to get to the planet to steal things, then they have to close with the monitor as well. And that's not very healthy, even for an actual cruiser.
