Has anyone ever used bases shaped like ship's wakes to base model ships? I'm not a fan of the fridge magnet look but I'm not a fan of wearing the paint off through handling either. It occurs to me that a base shaped like a wake might serve without looking unsightly. Someone must have tried this? |

I have seen bases with wakes molded on them. I think Rod Langton sells them for 1/1200 scale age of sail ships. |

I haven't seen that, no, but it's occurred to me too. If the only reason for basing is to facilitate handling of the models, I think it might be sufficient. However, many (most?) rules also utilize base edges for making measurements and angle determinations, and for that bases need to be composed of 4 straight edges at right angles to each other. - Ix |

I've never seen commercial bases like that either. For years I used solid bases for my ships. Recently, I've been converting to clear plastic and I think it looks much better. |

I've thought about this too, but decided that it would probably look a bit odd – and yet I will accept the 'fridge magnet' look! Perhaps it's the Virgo in me yearning for symmetry and order? I can't imagine it would be too hard to do but I've never seen any pictures of such basing. Nick |

I use the clear bases from ODGW with wakes engraved in them, they don't rub off with handling: link Here is a picture of some:

Those ODGW bases are like the emperor's new clothes. And such a lovely shade of green! |

Great idea! You never have to worry about the base color matching the table covering color. I need to try that! |
