I found this out quite by accident, but the Austrian government (and other mints) has been re-striking the Maria Theresa Thaler. A cool collectable and conversation piece. You can find it here, as well as elsewhere.

They were used for exchange in some African and Arab states well into the twentieth century. A former colleague's husband worked in finance and one of his jobs was to help move them onto more negotiable currencies.

I've had one for a while now. We used to use it to settle any disputes in our Warfare in the Age of Reason games.
