Easy question. You want to join a smuggling crew and there are only two captains available …

picture

Regardless what ship they're flying, which captain would you rather serve under?

A) Han Solo;
B) Malcolm Reynolds; or
C) You'd rather wait and see if someone else shows up, however long that takes

Giles the Zog12 Jun 2018 4:27 a.m. PST

(b) Malcolm Reynolds. Better sense of humour. And he does shoot first.

Cacique Caribe12 Jun 2018 4:50 a.m. PST

Giles: "Better sense of humor"

Some would say "psychotic". :)

I mean, i would never get in a ship captained by Malcolm Reynolds… Or take part in that universe.

Calico Bill12 Jun 2018 6:07 a.m. PST

B. Malcolm all the way😉. He looks after his crew, whether he likes them or not.

Narratio12 Jun 2018 6:07 a.m. PST

Reynolds, not doubt about it.

Ragbones12 Jun 2018 6:08 a.m. PST

Malcolm Reynolds.

Perris070712 Jun 2018 6:12 a.m. PST

Mal. Easy choice.

TheWhiteDog12 Jun 2018 6:20 a.m. PST

Mal, hands down. Though I'd be a bit more militant in my hatred of the Alliance.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP12 Jun 2018 6:26 a.m. PST

Hmm. Can't get Finnegan (Deep Rising) Altmeyer (Big Fish) or--more on point--Pausert and Goth of the Venture? (The Witches of Karres.) I really want Pausert and the Venture.

I suppose Reynolds--but only because I hate letting the Wookiee win.

Tgerritsen Supporting Member of TMP12 Jun 2018 7:00 a.m. PST

Malcom Reynolds, simply because he looks out for his crew, even if he doesn't like them.

However, if Hera Syndulla of the Ghost showed up (Star Wars Rebels), I'd go with her. She's easier on the eyes.

Mal. Met Nathan Fillion at SD Comicon years back. Really cool down-to-earth guy.

Mal vs Han. Who would be the last man standing?

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP12 Jun 2018 7:22 a.m. PST

And I forgot Sandor Kreja of Le Cygne (Merchanter's Luck) though Pausert of the Venture would still be my first choice. ("I don't know what you've done, Sir--but congratulations!")

If you really must have video, Harry Mudd and Cyrano Jones at least have interesting cargo.

StarCruiser12 Jun 2018 7:43 a.m. PST

Mal vs Han?

Both would be left sitting at the bar having a drink and telling jokes!

brave face12 Jun 2018 7:54 a.m. PST

My vote goes to Malcom.

15mm and 28mm Fanatik12 Jun 2018 7:55 a.m. PST

Who would be the last man standing?

The correct answer is "Whoever shoots first" of course.

PzGeneral12 Jun 2018 8:10 a.m. PST

Mal. No doubt.

haywire12 Jun 2018 8:54 a.m. PST

However, if Hera Syndulla of the Ghost showed up (Star Wars Rebels), I'd go with her. She's easier on the eyes.

And Sabine.

mrwigglesworth12 Jun 2018 9:25 a.m. PST

Malcom Reynolds, he would have shot kylo Ren on the bridge.

15mm and 28mm Fanatik12 Jun 2018 9:31 a.m. PST

Malcom Reynolds, he would have shot kylo Ren on the bridge.

Sure, because it wouldn't be his own blood he's wasting.

ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa12 Jun 2018 11:06 a.m. PST

Reynold's crew – he's got an actual Doctor (and if there's one thing I've learnt from sci-fi RPGs is the need for a good medic…. And armsmen and an engineer for that matter!)

Tango0112 Jun 2018 11:20 a.m. PST

Reynolds – I haven't seen Solo's engineer, but I have seen Mals…

Mal not only a better looking crew but a far far deadlier crew. Jayne and River. Plus, as far as we can tell Wash seems to be a better pilot, far less bumps and scuffs on the Serenity

Zeelow12 Jun 2018 1:27 p.m. PST

A. And I'm proud of it!

Mal.

He's better written.

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP12 Jun 2018 2:21 p.m. PST

Mal, he has best looking sci fy engineer.
and funniest helmsman.

Lucius12 Jun 2018 2:52 p.m. PST

Han never seems to have a crew. He just has a partner. Who usually gets screwed over somehow.

Sign me up on Serenity.

Judges?

Pontifex12 Jun 2018 4:38 p.m. PST

Nathan Fillion seems to like having been Reynolds.

Harrison Ford was a carpenter until Star Wars, and constantly complained and resented the role despite the fact that it was his doorway into greatness, and he more than anyone else benefitted from that which he claims to dislike so much.

I say that counts for fifty points for Mal right there. I'd rather fly with the guy who actually wants to be on his own gorram ship.

Cacique Caribe12 Jun 2018 8:30 p.m. PST

Just thought of something …

Both are apparently bad about money, specially for ship maintenance, but Solo always looks like he's purposely robbing Peter to pay Paul (cheating one client to pay another). I don't know how he could continue getting any jobs with that reputation.

Dan
PS. Oh, and my wife wants to know if they added the military background in the movie Solo just to make him more like Mal. Do any Star Wars fans know when they first came up with Han's soldiering history? Or was it invented just for the new film?

Mal, without hesitation.

Cyrus the Great12 Jun 2018 11:39 p.m. PST

I think I could follow more of my own agenda under Solo.

Giles the Zog13 Jun 2018 2:14 a.m. PST

@Dan – No IIRC Han's stint in the Imperial navy has always been there

Cacique Caribe13 Jun 2018 2:30 a.m. PST

@Giles
Imperial Navy? Wow. Thanks!

@Cyrus
Follow your own agenda? On someone else's ship? You sound just like Jayne on Ariel! :)

Dan

PMC31713 Jun 2018 5:13 a.m. PST

Yeah, in the EU Han Solo had been a pilot in the Imperial Navy, in the film Solo was a reluctant ground pounder in the Imperial Army, which explains really well why he can fly spacecraft… oh wait.

I'd rather get on board Malcolm Reynolds' ship to be honest. I do like Han, but, you know, there's your crewmates to consider. Like Kaylee.

Paint it Pink13 Jun 2018 9:10 a.m. PST

Do I get my own cabin?

Han replies, "What's a cabin."

Mal says, "Yep."

Easy choice.

Cacique Caribe13 Jun 2018 2:16 p.m. PST

Paint it Pink

LOL. Yes, with Solo you get to share a bunk with "the ugly one". :)

Dan
PS. Was Jayne's former boss (Marco, Out of Gas episode) meant to be a caricature of Han Solo? :)

Katzbalger13 Jun 2018 5:10 p.m. PST

Reynolds, since, as noted by others, he actually tries to take care of his crew.

Solo…well, his ship is faster, so a lack of cabins is not a big deal, but still.

Rob

Mithmee13 Jun 2018 7:44 p.m. PST

Malcolm since he has four ladies on board his ship.

All Han has is a very large Wookie.

Earl of the North14 Jun 2018 7:28 a.m. PST

Have to go with Mal for a lot of reasons, not least his ruthless streak against those who threaten his people.

Cacique Caribe14 Jun 2018 8:05 a.m. PST

Guys

The more I read all your replies, the more I agree with Patrick Sexton:

"Mal.
He's better written."

Added proof that the SW franchise, with its huge budget and long list of participants behind it, could have done so much more. So much more.

Dan

15mm and 28mm Fanatik14 Jun 2018 11:11 a.m. PST

SW made an impression to us because as kids we were open to such impressions. Kids have a sense of wonder and gullibility that cynical, jaded and more demanding adults lack.

So now as adults SW has nostalgic value to us and very little else. We may even see SW as shallow and overrated schlock.

The storytelling and characterizations of 'Firefly' are superior in every way.

Old Contemptibles14 Jun 2018 11:40 a.m. PST

Solo – I know. He is cool. I would join up the Han.

Reynolds – Never heard of him.

Cacique Caribe14 Jun 2018 12:57 p.m. PST

28mm Fanatik

LOL. Adult nostalgia about the magical moments in our childhood. Nice theory there.

But my brother was almost 30 when the first Star Wars films came out, and he became a big fan. Huge fan. Yet, right before he passed a couple of years ago he said he always left the theater disappointed whenever he went to see the newer episodes stuff.

Who knows? Maybe he would have liked Rogue One or Solo.
