"One of the all time great stories of war is that of soldiers facing a foe many times their size in fighting strength. One of the first appearances in human history of such a lopsided battle is the Battle of Thermopylae where 7,000 Greeks faced off against what is now estimated by historians to have been 100,000 to 150,000 Persians. This is such a prevalent type of war film, that I listed it as one of the central war film archetypes. In this week's article, I take a look at soldiers that fought to the end, against overwhelming odds, examining the odds of survival in each battle, and whether or not they survived (they live a surprising percentage of the time!) Last Stands are a bad thing for the defenders generally. But it makes a good movie … |

"An older WW2 version of an RPG". I think it would've been pretty easy to just google it to see what the Germans called it |

Gallipoli is a weird one to add since it is not a last stand. The Australians are the attackers trying to storm a Turkish trench line. Black Hawk Down was not really a last stand either, though there is the final scenes where the Rangers are surrounded until the air support arrives. Now I have to watch 13 Hours and Lone Survivor. What about Zulu Dawn? Or fictional last stands like The Wild Geese? |

I'd go black and white with Errol Flynn as George Custer. Of course it was "Rah-Rah!" Hollywood biopic. Covers the war college days and the civil war but the last stand scenes were rather epic. |

"Zulu" has got to rate #1; 2 from Vietnam-- "Go Tell the Spartans" and "Siege of Firebase Gloria" ('Zulu" in SEA). |

The defenders won in "Zulu". What about "Zulu Dawn"? +1 for the TV version of The Lost Battalion. LT |

I think Star Wars: A New Hope qualifies for that definition. I haven't seen The Beast yet, but I from what I understand it qualifies and is pretty highly thought of. |

Zulu Dawn, The 300 Spartans, and Wake Island. They Died With Their Boots On is OK but there has to be a better movie on Custers Last Stand. Not really a last stand but Charge of the Light Brigade. |
