Did the French or Spanish grenadiers fight in converged units or did they stay attached to their parent unit?

The French grenadiers stayed with their unit, for special tasks they were used separately, e.g. for storming redoubt 9 at Yorktown together with the light companies (chasseurs).

Don't you hate "it depends" answers. Some OBs indicate French units operating in our out of the West Indies were composed of companies drawn from several regiments, so one unit might consist of grenadier companies from several regiments and another might consist of fusilier companies drawn from several regiments. Rochambeau seems to have handled things differently.
