I just noticed that Caliver Books has published a new set of interesting 19th century colonial warfare rules titled "Mad Dogs and Englishmen." Does anyone know if anyone is going to carry this rule set in the U.S.? I hope that On Military Matters will carry it.

I noticed that OMM will be carrying the rules today and so I just ordered two copies.

I just received a copy of this rule set. My first impression is how badly written it is! The rules are not clearly explained and are laid out in a hap hazard manner.
There is no indication what is needed to play other than rulers. No mention of what dice, although the table make it clear that D10s for firing and D6 for melee. No mention of whether markers are needed for terror points or morale states.
Examples of rule ambiguities. Troops move by rolling a number of D6. In Rough you remove the highest dice. Rough terrain is never defined. 12 pages later there is terrain chart which lists types of terrain, most of which half movement. So, do you subtract a dice then half the remaining distance?
In shooting and melee you may have to half nmubers of dice or scores. No where in the rules does it state if you round up or down. A minor point but indicative of the lack of proof reading by someone who has not played the rules before.
Morale has a number of ambiguities. One result is "wavers, unformed halt if advancing" Does that mean all units waver and halt unformed if advancing or that only unformed units halt? No where is waver, unformed or disordered defined. No mention is made about how you rally from these state or what effect they have apart from, disorder slowing movement. Another morale result is "retire a full move" Is that the maximum dice score? A rout is equivalent the a charge move, so is ir rolled or a "full move like retire result?

In melee you roll dice for each figure scoring a kill on a 6 and a terror on a 5. The melee results have defeated by 1,2,3,4+. Is that hits or kills?

Commanders are not explained well. How many should you have? Common sense can sort that out but it would only have taken a sentence or two to advise on appropriate numbers.

Having bought them I do intend to try playing these rules
but I am disappointed in the poor layout and explantation
of even the most basic aspects or the rules.

This rule set has caught my attention because a scenario supplement that covers colonial Australia (along with Malaya and… the Solomon Islands?!) has just been released, so I'm reviving this thread just to ask if the second edition is any improvement on the first in terms of clarity.

Also, there's an add-on pack that strangely, considering that the basic rules set is supposedly for large skirmishes, includes… skirmish rules! My guess is that they take the action down to a more individualised level. I wouldn't be surprised therefore if there's a Glenrowan scenario in the new book.
