The paint job, I like it.
The color scheme, I get it.
The skull at the base, I get it. (nice glow effect from the crystals.)

The female anatomy bits on a necrotized cyborg with spider legs, whaaat?

Yes, I like the paint job. But AFAIK, Necron are neither male or female ?

But who knows what GW was thinking ?

Pictors Studio09 Jun 2018 8:35 a.m. PST

Necrons were once male or female. When they put themselves in the cybernetic bodies they gave over their flesh forms almost completely.

Of course it doesn't matter what GW was thinking on this particular model as it isn't a GW model.

Glad you like the paint job my friends!. (smile)

Good points Pictor … I stand corrected … frown

The H Man11 Jun 2018 9:52 p.m. PST

Your both correct.

Necrons were once a typical humanoid race, like the cybermen on Dr Who. Yet, GW may have missed a trick with them, as female looking necrons could look great, as this post clearly shows, and may sell well.

I remember when the dark eldar's first plastics came out with a mix of men and women, it was a cool touch that the guard certainly lacked. I think the earlier eldar metals had female guardians?

Yeah I too remember the Eldar females … Been "involved" with GW since @ '90. There have been so many changes since then … it's like Orwellian New Speak, etc. frown

And I don't know how anyone gets away with making anything that close to a GW product ! Without thinking … I thought that was a pic of some new GW Necrons ! huh?

Its a nice model but a rip off of GW's IP

The H Man12 Jun 2018 9:54 p.m. PST

I don't think GW make a 6 legged female necron with a 2 handed axe?

If they had done an exact recast of an existing GW figure they may get in strife, but this is clearly a unique figure, though obviously based on the necron style. As much as necrons were based upon The Terminator endoskeleton style, that is.

Actually: they were probably based upon GW androids, which in turn were based on T1 endoskeletons. Though necrons may have appeared around 92, around T2, so may be based on both, er all 3…

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Its the risk companies run when they develop popular characters like Terminators and Necrons.

On a side note, James Cameron did plagiarize a couple of the outer limits stories (Soldier and Demon with a glass hand) to write The Terminator, they settled out of court for some amount of money and ever since there has been a credit acknowledging the works of Halan Ellison at the start of the credits. Cameron blabbed what he had done in an interview and that was how they were able to get him on it. Furthermore, the later films and tv show may reference these stories even more. Agent Ellis may be named after Ellison? Spoliers! The fact marcus does not know he is a terminator until the end of salvation, mirrors Demon's story. I am sure there are more, and I recommend any fan watch the shows for themselves.

I did not say it was a violation of copyright law or not, I just said its a rip off of GW's IP. If you put this model amongst a bunch of Necrons it would be basically indistinguishable as some necron variant to someone who didn't follow GW closely.

Copyright infringement or not, this is a blatent rip off of GW's necrons. Its is pretty cool, but still just leeching off of GW's IP and capitalizing on its populatity, rather than creating something original.

GW clearly based the original necrons off of the Terminator, but quickly moved way beyond that and developed their own unique and creative IP beyond "skeleton robots".

Always interesting to see these debates about GW and whether they are ripping someone else off. A number of manufacturers have come into being making models and other materials to cater to GW's products, especially 40K. This has become more common place as GW has lost some of its IP legal battles while winning others. Designers who have some legal acumen and understanding of both copyright law and international law have managed to gauge how close to the edge they can skirt while providing us the customer with a wider diversity of miniatures and other products. And I think if someone on the GW board or design team would be brutally honest they would admit that GW has benefited from this competition and so has their customer base.

Consider how much the quality of GW's plastics have improved over the past decades as well as the designs. While part of this has been improvement in the technical process and 3D modeling and printing, it has also been driven by the fact many of these outlier manufacturers are making product as good or better in terms of design and sometime at a better price. These outliers have also filled gaps in the GW cannon players have wanted but GW never got around to creating. And when it comes to the Imperial Guard or the forces of the Inquisition you are spoiled for choice among the alternative manufacturers. Just check out this link to see what is out there if you are in doubt. I would have to say the same for Space Marines in particular if you want to create a unique looking chapter. Plus if you do want to do an established Space Marine or Chaos Space Marine chapter but GW does not make a particular embossed should pad, just check out Shapeways and I bet someone makes that icon on a particular looking paulderon.
