Best Commander of the French & Indian War – you voted for Major General James Wolfe. TMP link |

Usually when a general gets himself killed, he gets blamed for the disaster. Fortunately for Wolfe, Montcalm managed the same thing. |

Absolutely In one bold, crazy move Wolfe managed to change the fate of a continent And he had the good sense to get killed when he was still at his peak |

Benedict Arnold should have done that at Saratoga. |

John – So right about Arnold! Jim |

Benedict Arnold should have done that at Saratoga. Would've resulted in MANY "Arnold" "Counties" in the original 13 states. Flawed man in a "World Turned Upside Down". |

Wolfe is legend… So is Montcalm… They both earned it. |
Unlucky General | 07 Jun 2018 8:27 p.m. PST |
I'd have thought he was lucky and unlucky at the same time. Did the British win on the Plains more than the French lost it? |

Wolfe made a big error when he ordered the failed assault on the Montmorency Shore butwon the big one helped by French indecision by failing to wait for reinforcements. |

I think you have to look at the overall campaign as well as the 15 minute battle. In that regard, yes I would say that the English one it. Of course their government devoted more resources to that part of the war as well. |

In a very different way, Forbes? Regards Russ Dunaway |

While I am a Forbes fan, I think the impact of what Wolfe's forces accomplished are more significant. Look at it this way – if Forbes was turned back vs. Wolfe. If Forbes succeeds but Wolfe fails, the war goes on, but if Forbes fails but Wolfe succeeds, the war is still pretty much over. |

Interestingly both the best books on Wolfe and Arnold are by the same fella. Steve Brumwell. Remember Arnold nearly had his own moment of glory on the Plains of Abraham too |

But if Forbes fails, the French maintain control of the point in Pittsburgh and the Ohio??? Regards Russ Dunaway |

I went to Wolfe's birthplace a couple of weeks ago. It was bought by a Canadian guy, who then died before he could make much progress with restoration. His will sort of left it to the Canadian government. Thankfully, they decided that attempting to maintain an old house in England was a bit outside their remit and managed to persuade those involved that giving it to the National Trust in 1918 was the best plan. Now very nicely presented in the style Wolfe's parents would recognise alongside being a memorial to the great man, with things he wore and used. |

Russ: How could they if their supplies are cut off? Look what happened when Frontenac fell. Quebec was a stake in the heart of New France. Fort Duquesne and all the other Western outposts would have withered away. Heck, they only kept a skeleton Garrison most of the year there anyway and they were starving. |

Have you read the Cubbison book on the campaign? Excellent. |
