I am torn on whether or not I should base my 6mm vehicles or if I should keep them loose.

Thoughts?

I personally consider 6mm vehicles too small, fiddly and fragile to use unbased. I also like to enforce some spacing between vehicles, have consistent frontages, magnetize the bottoms for secure storage, and have someplace to hide a label out of sight (I don't like labels showing).

But I am also only interested in large unit tactics. If you're playing a skirmishy 1:1 game, you may have to leave them unbased for micro-tactical purposes.

Yes, base them. Mainly for handling, diorama effect, sometimes writing information.

I also use unbased, but not in the same circumstances, mostly for micro-tactical.

Martin Rapier06 Jun 2018 11:08 p.m. PST

Yes, the whole lot are based. Just the same as my 2mm and 15mm.

Back in the mid 1970s I didn't base them, but times change.

LOts of resons ideas on why and what. I have only ever dabbled in 6mm, I would never consider basing normal AFV's. I dont base my 10mm Wiesel which are a tad smallet than a Sherman in 6mm. But I have never got on wiith "Big" games all vehicels are at 1:1.

Nothing worse personally than a tank on a lawn going down a road. I have to do it with infantry but it still looks daft.

Clear bases always reflect too much. I need a nearly invisible clear base material.

Andy ONeill06 Jun 2018 11:54 p.m. PST

no.
I base the guns which I have crew for.
I bought mine in the 1970s and haven't done much with em since.

The Wargames Room06 Jun 2018 11:57 p.m. PST

I base mine. In my case the rules require them to be based. However, in my view the basing improves the look of the models.

I use small tin tabs to base on

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP07 Jun 2018 1:50 a.m. PST

Some. A kettenrad is a vehicle, after all. Everything is based at 2mm.

Bellbottom07 Jun 2018 2:08 a.m. PST

I have thousands, none of them based. I don't find them fiddly, and I think any base detracts from the vehicle, and the overall 'look' of the game. I don't even base 15mm vehicles.
In addition, once your vehicle is based then you're limited to which theatre you can use it in, or you have to have multiples of vehicles with basing for sand, steppe, European etc. Nothing looks worse than green bases on sand terrain.

roving bandit07 Jun 2018 2:18 a.m. PST

No, I don't base my 6mm, 3mm, or 2mm vehicles.

Vigilant07 Jun 2018 2:49 a.m. PST

10mm and smaller I base, as do all the others in the club I'm in. 15mm and above I only base infantry, crew served weapons and things such as motorbikes that wouldn't stand up otherwise.

Yes.

Allen5707 Jun 2018 4:56 a.m. PST

Yes for 6mm because the infantry are based and I don't like the 3mm height the base adds next to an unbased vehicle.

No only smaller vehicles like bikes, etc., and pretty much all FA/mortars, etc., types …

And all Infantry of course, 3-6 on a base, generally …

Nope – have thought about it, but not so far

No to vehicles. Yes to infantry, support weapons, artillery and AT guns.

deephorse07 Jun 2018 7:39 a.m. PST

Yes

Chinggis07 Jun 2018 7:55 a.m. PST

Yes to all, whatever scale, for all the reasons above.

donlowry07 Jun 2018 9:33 a.m. PST

No, but then I don't have to transport them. I did at one time put them on stiff paper bases, but for ID purposes (so I could indicate not only what kind of vehicle it is but what organization it belongs to), but decided I didn't like the look.

Infantry at that scale, of course, have to be based.

Nope to vehicles in 6mm. Yes to my 3mm vehicles.

catavar07 Jun 2018 10:54 a.m. PST

No. I think they look better, fit around terrain better, and take less space when stored.

No.

Oberlindes Sol LIC Supporting Member of TMP07 Jun 2018 1:22 p.m. PST

I don't base any vehicles, regardless of scale. They just look better without bases.

Bashytubits07 Jun 2018 1:31 p.m. PST

They look better on the gaming surface without bases, but to protect the models I always base mine. There is nothing worse than to have a friend mishandle your models and bend or break the mgs, barrels on nice miniatures. So in the interest of friendship, most of my gaming friends are hopelessly hamfisted, they get a base.

I don't base "6mm" vehicles, and use unobtrusive, thin plastic sheet infantry and gun bases. IMHO, it just looks better from a distance. For the same reason, I don't base ships.

repaint07 Jun 2018 10:42 p.m. PST

what about transparent bases then?

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP08 Jun 2018 7:45 a.m. PST

I only use clear bases for aircraft … most of the time.

chrisswim19 Jun 2018 8:24 p.m. PST

NO. I do not base, except if I want a tractor-trailer, command group, etc. I have thousands and thousands.

Keith Talent19 Jun 2018 11:27 p.m. PST

Well, some rules require you to base them.

Andy ONeill20 Jun 2018 4:39 a.m. PST

For rules which absolutely rely on a base, i use a card square and blu tak blob.
My micro stuff is very old cheap stuff with thick gloss varnish.

Mark 1 Supporting Member of TMP20 Jun 2018 10:32 a.m. PST

Generally no.

I've never based tanks.

Sometimes in the past I have based vehicles with trailers when it was a combination that would necessarily travel together, like the caisson regularly towed, along with the AT gun, by the French Chenillette. Or occasionally I have based a trailer with a jeep or truck or halftrack, as I have many such vehicles, and the vehicle-with-trailer adds a little variety to the motorpool.

More recently I base trailers, with an extension on the base that I can put the towing vehicle on, to make a combo.

In these cases the bases have been quite narrow … just enough to get under the wheels / tracks of the vehicles / trailers in question.
