During the traditional New Year fusillade that marked the advent of 1972, one of the guys in our guard tower decided to fire a 40mm flare from the launcher on his M203. Unfortunately, in the dark he accidentally loaded a CS round instead; it flew across the small strip of swamp separating us from the brigade MP company and detonated on top of their command bunker. Being the humorless Cossacks they were, the MPs retaliated by firing one of their perimeter multi-barrelled gas launchers (I don't remember the designation; we called them "gas blasters"). Of course, the guys in the tower were well above the barrage but the officers' latrine was not and all four holes were in use. |
