I can't see any disadvantage to unreformed infantry being in extended line. Am I missing something?

Maybe the bug has had its evil way with the post?

What rules? In the real world, they'd be in trouble from cavalry and infantry in either column or closed line.

I haven't got the rulebook handy, but I think the only disadvantage for unreformed infantry in line is the puny range of 2MU if there's no artillery or skirmish attachment, the same as when in tractical formation.

In FoG:N any infantry in line caught by cavalry or assaulted infantry in tactical formation will be in trouble.

That's my point. Their firing has the same range as unreformed tactical, they move the same speed as unreformed tactical. Why would you bother with tactical

After making the initial post I reread the CMT table. If charged by cavalry they form square on 6 not 5. And thinking it through its possible to hit them with more chargers simultaneously, diluting the dice, as well as making it hard to charge multiple units into the same tactical formation.

For clarification I posted ONLY on the Field of Glory board, that's why I didn't mention the rule's name!

Unreformed in extended line move the same as unreformed in tactical (although in version 2, unreformed in tactical, but not extended line, will be able to move 6MU while beyond 6MU of enemy).

Once within 6MU of enemy, all unreformed move 4MU.

The big advantage of extended line is that you double your short range firepower, and can extend your frontage to cover a potential gap.

Disadvantages:
- You need a 6 for your CT if assaulted by cavalry
- your double frontage might potentially attract double the volume of enemy skirmish fire…
