Thinking about doing a French AWI unit for Sharp Practice but not sure which one to go with. Trying to limit it to battles on the North American continent. Seems like the Agenois unit might b a good choice as they had grenadiers, chasseurs, and fusiliers and showed up in all the major theaters: Savannah, Pensacola, and Yorktown. Not sure how they rated, however. Do you have a favorite French unit in the AWI or a recommendation?

Thanks!

Lauzun's Legion

@Corporal Fagen

Because of the Hussars? :-)

Second Lauzun's Legion.
But make sure the Hussars have no pelisse.
((Autocorrect changed pelisse to pelvises, bless their heart.))
Foundry SYW Hussars with Mirleton have optional pelisses on a spruce. Save them for Orcs, like I did.
Perry also make specifically Lauzun's Hussars, without pelisse but make sure you order those.
Since it's a Legion, you have our permission to go off gallivanting in the Bush. You can also have artillerists.

I've been wanting to do Savanna French, because they had Dillon with dashing red and black. Also, most of the French Infantry were detachments from other regiments. Each stand can be painted differently!
We need to stop the Perrys from their Oooh Shiny! distraction with irrelevant Napoleonics and do the "colored" auxiliaries like du Cap and Martinique regiments.

For the purists, you "cannot" mix Savannah and Yorktown French, because the uniforms are different. Ignore them. Figures and painting time are expensive.

I would rate them as you would Hessians, or as British who just got off the boat, depending on when they arrived. If you consider them acclimated, rate as British.

Also! At Savannah, the French had the Belzunce Dragoons!
Although I have no idea who makes 28mm figures for them. Pretty uniform and helmet though.

Now I want to paint some hussars with no pelvises…

Well said.

@axabrax

Yes, especially the lancers

But the pelisses look sooooo cool. (And you are correct about the autocorrect pelvis fracture.)

The blog by Fredericus shows how he used Front Rank SYW dragoons (Front Rank have some Schomberg Light Dragoons in their SYW range. They have the right type of helmet for the French dragoons of the 1770ies, but the uniform coat is of the wrong cut of course, and above all the figures have a number of flaws: They wear the wrong form of dragoon gaiters (instead of boots), carry two pistols instead of one pistol and a tool at the saddle, they do not have a picket-pole, and their sabres are rather straight etc.) See link below.

Addendum.
Old Glory also make Lauzun's Legion without pelvises. grin
With an arm option holding lance instead of sword.
And of course Himself, the Duc in one of his many "other" uniforms. This time wearing a busby. It's good to be the Duc.

Infantry for petite guerre would likely be chasseur companies from the regiments.
