link So, are these guys under the impression that they are bringing peace through the beheading of civilian "infidels"? They know this is the 21st century, right? Will this escalate further, you think? Dan |

Not much further, no. It's really hard to provide a reason without going down a deep political rabbit hole. |

I really don't know the answer to that question. Maybe some are religious fanatics and actually believe in their own nonsense. I think many are simply thugs and part of a criminal network cloaked in religion. And some are just plain evil. Bad things have been taking place in Africa for a long time now. Very sad. |

If you shorten folks by a foot (or a head), they'll be less likely to ask for more food and other precious resources. "Blue Fez" anyone? |

Pretty standard Warlord/terrorist activity – the report notes that the thugs are funding them selves by selling timber and rubies – so they just want to keep the locals intimidated and not cooperating with the government. They are probably also shaking down mining companies in the area for 'insurance' as well. |

The human condition includes violence, unfortunately. Even modern western democracies are not immune to " the slaughter of the innocents" . The solutions? Well, whether in Africa or elsewhere if I knew a solution I'd be up for a Nobel prize. |

TIA. This is Africa. This behavior isn't unusual. Sadly. But it's about what you can expect when you suddenly give an early iron-age culture industrial-age weapons. |

@Lion I tend to agree with you but with the rider that giving any culture readily available Industrial Age weapons seems to produce shocking outcomes. Our African brothers aren't unique in being able to perpetrate massacres. |
