Just a curious question to throw out to the group.

Do you keep your spare leftover bits all together in a single container? (one big bin with everything together)
Do you keep the bits separate by genre, but otherwise mixed? (all spare WWII in one bin, Ancients in another, etc)
Do you keep them separate by maker, but otherwise mixed? (Warlord bin, GW bin, etc)
Do you go as far as keeping them separate by game factions? ( Warlord WWII German, Black tree Design WWII Americans, GW Space Marines, Wargames Factory Zulu, etc)

For me it is one Big Bin with everything mixed, but that is at the end (or pause) of a project when all the little bins get dumped together into the communal bin.

I have the world's largest collection of seashells. I keep it scattered across the beaches of the world.

I have the world's largest collection of bits. I keep them scattered across every room of my house.

Multiple semi-sorted things, and lots of "bits of the moment" while doing conversions on my panting surface. They are sort of sorted by "type" – heads here (and some there), arms in that old M&M container, katanas? yeah, they're around here somewheres …

I keep them all in separate plastic bags marked as to what they are.

Scale. Sometimes, within scale, period.

Genre and scale so 15mm WW2 go in one bin and 28mm ww2 go in another

In one of those metal box with pull out plastic bins. Sorted in a general way by period and contents.

I think I have a full bin of RalPartha Ansar shields.

I use those "fishing tackle" bits boxes, the cheap plastic ones with removable dividers you can but at a dollar store. Each box contains one subject, ACW Union, 13th Centuary Knights, Scandinavian warriors etc. I keep the bits in separate compartments, right arms, left arms, heads with kepi, weapons, heads in hats. I am quite well organised as I don't have the room to be otherwise!

I fill shoe boxes, plastic storage containers, ziploc bags, etc with bits in no particular order. I fill 2'x2'x2' moving boxes with my bits, and then put them in Storage. I probably have 20 or so of these boxes by this time.

The old system was ziplock bags and a few Plano boxes, but I've been moving to get everything into small, assorted, cheap labelled lidded containers (many formerly held dog food).

Those are sorted into large plastic bins. I pour the contents onto the concave lids to sort though them.

Things are sorted fairly generally, such as "28mm plastic heads", though I have more specific ones such as "horse & musket heads", (mostly thanks to the tons of spare bits on the old Wargame Factory WSS sprues).

Sedimentary layers which require periodic excavation.

Bits are in clear plastic parts boxes with adjustable dividers. Larger pieces are in a larger plastic box.

Several "general" type drawers. Like plastic vs metal bits. Need to get rid of some of the accumulated GW bits I think.

JimDuncanUK26 May 2018 4:13 a.m. PST

I have many bits boxes.

I even remember where some of them are.

Vigilant26 May 2018 4:13 a.m. PST

I've a divided box for 28mm bits split into heads, left arms, right arms, packs, weapons and odds.

I have a number of bits bins. There are the cast metal 25mm Ancient bits, nicely sorted in small boxes in a bigger box, the 20mm WW2 bits, stored with the 20mm figures. It is the "terrain" bits boxes that are the problem. Scrap bits of wood, metal, plastic; collected into a box until they are sorted into another box, then sorted into other boxes in a big box in the loft. Except for those in the garage, the many round tubular bits, the teddy bear fur, etc., etc..
I have a lifetime's collection of bits. The good news is that now I am retired I may actually finish some of the terrain bits that I started up to thirty years ago – I am currently finishing a stockade started in the 80's !

Small bits go into clear plastic containers (that previously held food), sorted by what they are or what I think I mignt use them for. Larger items, like old computer mice, may go into plastic bags or larger plastic containers. They all end up in a couple of cardboard boxes.
