I finally played my first game of Saga 2nd Edition and I have to say I am pleased. We used the battle at the fords scenario from the old rules, which is perhaps my only gripe – i.e. lack of current scenarios (until the Book of Battle is released). The rules have been nicely streamlined and I like the new layout. Much of the cheesiness is removed and the rules are actually simpler to learn in my opinion. For instance, I thought I wouldn't like the straight line movement, but it actually negates the need for the old minimum closing distance with enemy units rule. I didn't miss the warlord side-by-side attacks either. I only own the core rules and Age of Vikings at this stage but am eagerly awaiting future releases… I understand the Crusades is out – what next??

Interesting.

Reaction in our club was just the opposite and a few of the game's champions are now looking for new rules….

I have not played. Glad to hear you like the movement rules I was worried they would play very awkwardly.

The whole thing smacks of "lets make more money" and
"don't fix something that's not broken".

Me? I'd like the stinkers to just offer a reprint of M&T, as my book is falling apart.

Have to say my club is of the same opinion that v2 is a definite improvement.
Game plays simpler and the battle boards feel a lot more interesting, balanced and usable, especially now you can store dice without costing your dice generation.

Overall my club has given it the thumbs up!

In my experience, Ruleset Version 2 tends to be an incremental improvement at most, but Studio Tomahawk really did a nice job of filing off the rough edges that had accumulated through the various permutations of Version 1. In addition, I think the "universes" provide an excellent framework for future expansions.

My reaction was the same as Extra Crispy and Pan Marek. Version 2 "fixed" a lot of things that weren't broken and didnt need fixing. I'm not dumping the game as Version 1 is quite fine.

…..especially now you can store dice without costing your dice generation.

A good example of what I mentioned above. In my opinion, NOT being able to store your dice added some tactical considerations to the implementation of the Saga dice. Ymmv.

It doesn't bother you to have to buy the game all over again? V1 works great for us but won't put anyone down who wants to play the new version.

Does it matter whether you play V1 or V2 as long as you enjoy playing Saga? My old club (before relocating) stopped playing V1 (don't really know why) but have started playing again using V2 whilst a club my nephew plays at have decided to stick with V1 as they are happy with it. Don't see a problem with this myself.

There were a lot of gamey corners in v1 which are fixed by v2. Considering how much we all spend on figures the cost of the rules is hardly excessive.
v1 is a perfectly good game, but I'd say v2 is probably better. For instance, that ability to bank dice allows factions who are down to a few dice more options. In v1, you were doomed; in v2 you can build up dice and have one last glorious effort which may go down in the sagas.
