Does anyone know what is happening with the Derby World Wargames event this year. Last year it was at Bruntingthorpe and the grapevine says this booking has been cancelled!

Is there to be a show at a new venue or is there no show this year and possibly the beginning of the end?! I for one quite liked the old Donnington venue but I understand that this is not available any more for non automotive events!

Any news?

This was been discussed openly at Partizan at the weekend – general consensus is that it's a no go…….especially with the lack of updates.

Personnelly hated the new venue – didn't think it was safe, but have supported the show since it was in the assembly rooms in the city centre.

Also means I get my birthday weekend back!

From what I have heard from various sources they were locked into the new venue for 1 or 2 more years, but the old Donnington venue has had a rethink and now want them back. Perhaps there is some negotiation going on to get out of the existing contract. I for 1 hope that they go back to Donnington since it is a much better venue and a lot easier to get to. Last year's trip took almost as long to get to as Salute, yet it was 90 miles closer to me!

Great news Vigilant really hope they go back to Donnington the taxi driver a local lad who took me over last year couldn't find the place

I too would vote for a return to Donnington which I always enjoyed (despite the motor sport noise).

Derby Worlds have been one of my "go to" shows over the last 25 years and sadly I hated last years venue! Apart from better natural light Bruntingthorpe had NOTHING to recommend it! Too cramped, expensive food and too far out of the way with no decent close hotels!! I vowed not to return.

Fingers crossed for a return to Donnington!

Talking about 'Derby' at my club this week and thinking there must be somewhere in the East Midlands that is better than Donnington and Bruntingthorpe. There does seem to be a lack of a decent venue on the region. Oh well back to the noisy shed, need to make a packed lunch.

The following has just been sent to the BGMR Yahoo Group:

Chaps, sadly I think that's unlikely .. first and foremost because the old venue in Derby is now a permanent Car Auction site and i sno longer an events venue : see

I also sent the following email to Ian last week:

Hi Ian

Just wanted to update you on the latest with "Derby" – which is unfortunately not entirely positive I'm afraid.

As you'll know I (on behalf of the BHGS) had volunteered to corral almost all of the tournaments and umpires in the run up to the event, with the logistics and everything else being done by the Derby organisers. I wasn't part of the "organising team" as such, but had simply offered the BHGS's help to a team of people who were unfamiliar with tournaments and the requirements of tournament players.

As of today the situation is as follows:

· The main "Derby" guy hasn't responded to any of my emails since February. Last year by now we'd been in regular communication for several months, we'd met at Salute! and as a result I was able to have had the announcement out to all of you umpires by now.

· None of the traders I've spoken to at various events over the last few months have been sent booking information – again, apparently this was sent out by March last year (based on what I've been told)

· As a result of this I (and I believe various other people also) called the venue at Bruntingthorpe. The venue has told me directly that the booking for the "Derby Worlds" event was cancelled earlier this year, and they have no booking for it at all.

So, possibly the Derby people have a new venue, and are even now making plans they have yet to communicate to anyone at all – however factoring in the well-publicised troubles that the organisers had with the traders last year – many of whom have very vocally been saying that they won't go back, and saying so to anyone who will listen – and it's unfortunately rather hard to draw any sensible conclusion other than that the "Derby Worlds" event appears unlikely to go ahead this year.

It's important to stress that this isn't an "official" announcement of any sort on behalf of Derby Worlds – as I said at the beginning, neither I nor the BHGS are anything to do with the organisation or management of the Derby Worlds show, we just helped last year in translating the requirements of you, the tournament organisers, and passed them onto the actual people running the event.

However, as I'd been in touch with you about the tournament side last I just wanted to let you know the current situation, and explain why you've not heard from me this time around so you can advise your players and plan accordingly.

Tim
